Don't cha think it's be a good idea to turn e-mail verification back on?

The way it is now, anybody can use any e-mail address (real or not, theirs or someone else's) and immediately begin posting.

Maybe this was just an accident of the change of board, in which case, please take this as a humourous but serious notice that many bad things can happen as a result.

I'm one person who posts from several different computers - "home" on one side of the Pond, "office" ditto, "home" on the oither side of the Pond, using a different e-mail address in each case. If the system is set up to allow me only to use one address, which is what George Dubya seems to be suggesting, this will be a major inconvenience. I'm sure others must also use different addresses - perhaps when using laptop as opposed to desk PC.

Despite the different locations, I use the same username all the time.

Email verification means that when you register, you will be sent an email at the address you gave before you can post.

You have to respond to the email that was sent to the address you gave or you won't be allowed to post.


That would stop people from inventing false addresses or pretending to be someone else.

Don't worry, it doesn't mean you can't post from other computers once you're verified...

Yes, it does. Thanks, Kevin. The only problem I can see is one I encountered on one or two other forums which had this system, and that is where the e-mail sent to you takes so long to arrive - i.e. as much as several hours or more (and requires a response within the next 24 hours or you are blacked for ever unless you change your username) - that you've perhaps already had to leave for another place. If the system generated an e-mail to respond to within a reasonable space of time (say half an hour), then I'd be in favor of it.

Just use an email such as hotmail or yahoo that you can get anywhere. Although after all the stuff thats been going on I would almonst suggest that everyone have to have an email from and ISP or corporate account on file with Randy

I doubt very much, that FlyerTalk (or other USA based boards) would have many non-USA-ISP or corporate accounts on file. Do you want to exclude non-americans?

Rudi, I think the way this suggestion would be implemented (if they were to do it) is that they would check if your e-mail address against a list of the "free" web-based mail services such as hotmail.com, yahoo, etc.

Either way, e-mail verification should be turned back on! :eek:

To clarify what I was saying. I post here with a hotmail account. Part of the reason for that is I cant get email from my @home account on the road ( have to be on the cable) However, my original sign up would be required to be from the @home account.

the only problem I would see would be with people who use "free' ISP's - but I don't think many of those exist anymore

jan_az: Actually you can pick up @home mail on the road. For those of us here in Canada, all we have to do is set the incoming server (POP3) as netmail.home.com. You can only receive mail using this method. Try it out, I am pretty sure it's the same in the U.S.

I pull my work email, home cable email, etc. from whichever computer I may be sitting in front of just by setting up the POP and SMTP servers to do so. I use Outlook, so I'm not sure how easy this would be to do otherwise, but I know on Yahoo you can also setup for other POP access..

I find it interesting that the OP registered under this identity for the sole purpose of making this post. Clearly if he knew there had been a change in how FT handles new registrations, that means he has registered under more than one identity with FT. Does that raise credibility concerns with others? It certainly does with me.
