UA guest speaker summary

Will a summary of the questions and answers of the phone/computer conference be posted somewhere on this service for those that do not sign on to read?

Randy Petersen Apr 9, 2001 8:13 am

Absolutely, the United chat is no different than the other live chats we've had so far this year. All transcripts are available in the 'Live Chat' tab at the top of the FlyerTalk pages. Listed by month, they also show the name of the guest. We hope to have the transcript up the following day.

Thanks for the question.

I am very happy to hear this b/c I will be seeing U2 tomorrow night! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

ozstamps Apr 11, 2001 8:25 pm

I hope I'm wrong but log on EARLY Chexfan. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gifUA have made a direct invite to their 40 million or whatever MP members to join in the chat, so might just be a surprise roll up, and only 500 are possible I understand. A few 100 new visitors would be a great result for Randy and FT, and that is why these things are arranged clearly, but a FAR larger roll up than the previous big shot chats is to be expected I think.

I really hope then issues raised in the short time these guys are kindly devoting to FT are ones that otherwise are hard to get senior staff responses to, such as the new upgrade system, and lack of transferrability to family or friends etc, and the current staff penchant to simply "steal" long dated EUG as they do now, without even telling you, even when you have soon expiring paper certs in your wallet or the upgrade has already been "pre-paid" some other way. Those type of questions I hope we see, and not too many if any newbie questions from general MP members like "how many points does it take to fly in coach from El Paso to Vancouver in August" etc.

What time do you think we must log on to be part of the 500? I have never participated in 'Live Chat' before. Any advice for the newbie?

ozstamps Apr 11, 2001 9:38 pm

I've been in the last few with Starwood and NorthWest etc, and Randy's folks might have more accurate numbers to post, but there did not look to be excessive participants. My recollection is no more than 100 for NorthWest at any time .... possibly far less at times?

Just not sure if NW or SW promoted the night as widely UA have done via their website. (Link below.) So to be safe I'll be logging on 30 minutes ahead if indeed I am around at whatever time it starts. Who knows, maybe only 100-200 will log in, but 'better safe than sorry'. Open a window for chat, log in, and go about your other business via other windows, but you are "in" at least!

I tried to start a sensible disussion of pertinent questions to pose which one FT user chose to de-rail with his 'interesting' views, shared by few if any regulars at United Forum it seems:

Glen, If you are referring to me, I don't think I derailed anything. You are entitled to your views, as I am mine. People will make of them what they will. I have questions I want to ask on topics of interest to me. You may or may not have a similar interest. My views are no more or less viable for discussion based on how many people do or do not agree with me. Your interests are no more or less important than mine. I don't think my discussion any less sensible than yours, perhaps more sensitive would be the better description.

I intend to get answers to my questions and attention to my concerns whether by live discussion or by direct contact. While it might be more interesting to get answers in a venue with a large number of people present I can be just as happy pursuing my line of action by any avenue at my disposal.

Personally, I feel the discussion died away because some peoples interest in breaking the rules was threatened by my inquiry. But since we know Glen that you have taken action against people who break the rules by discussing those rule breakers in the United forum and want to see rule breaking ended, I know you support me in my efforts to have similar discussions.

Let's see here.

You started a thread asking a single question about electronic upgrades and their transferability (or lack of). Nowhere did you invite anyone to offer other questions for the Chat. The thread is titled "WHAT is the current "real life" policy with electronic upgrades re transferring them?"

The topic generated a few replies. You then went into some discussion of bonuses on CO [now edited] in your second post on said thread.

But now looking back you claim that "I tried to start a sensible disussion of pertinent questions to pose which one FT user chose to de-rail with his 'interesting' views..."

Right... Actually, I'd say that there are some UA and non-UA flyers who do care about this. Of course there are less now since some of the UA flyers that do care were driven away by your boorish behavior. wormwood asked a fairly simple question. I suppose it should not surprise me (or anyone here) that you have a double standard when it comes to respecting rules and outing others (e.g. the "What a CRETIN! thread,") since you showed us the way on that one with the campaign on users of fake handles being equivalent to people "putting a KKK hood on and firing away with no impact on the "nice" person who is actually typing."

SanDiegoIK .. there is also a 100,000 point giveaway - 5 lots of 20,000, that is featured atop every Forum page right now, so that alone will attract a lot of FT visitors for obvious reasons (one chance in 100 to win 20,000 points is darn good odds)who may not normally have any interest in UA matters, so another good reason to log in early!

sorry for the confusion Oz. I was saying that I was thankful that the transcripts will be posted by Randy & Co. I am going to be missing the UA Live Chat b/c I am going to see Bono and the boys at the TacomaDome!

Chexfan ... The nuances of the English language. Sorry, I took your post above to mean: "seeing you two tomorrow night" - i.e. referring to Randy and Beckles, the two who posted before you. Take the ear plugs then. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Previous chats have been with an average of 185 people online. We understand from Talk City that those are quite respectable for any type of chat. As for the United chat, in the early tests with them, they have asked us to give them whaqtever the people are asking for. Robest and Jim have been very, very forthcoming. We were utterly surprised to see that indeed, they added a plug for the FlyerTalk Live! chat to their My MileagePlus statements. Honestly, we are flattered by this gesture. We are trying to find a short term solution to increase the number of users for this chat because we do know that United is the number one forum in all of FlyerTalk land and that alone should fill the house. But when we add in other Mileage Plus members, it is likely to be crowded. We suggest that you log on at least 15 minutes early and leave the screen up to hold a place. I hope we don't have to turn anyone away. We expect a great dialog and think this one will be the most exciting chat yet. And next month we have the President of American AAdvantage and the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of frequent flyer programs.

And of course, two months in a row that we're getting 100,000-mile giveaways. Hey, is this great or what?

Here is a good thread to review before tonight's chat, with a lot of good questions to put in front of the UA execs:
www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/005681.html

Another question can be found at: www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/005762.html

And on this thread, dominick asks how the 100,000 UA miles are given away. Do you have to ask a question, or is being logged on sufficient to qualify?

Actually, we leave the idea of how to disperse the miles up to the guest, in this case United. I think that last month when we did a random draw was greeted with very positive remarks, s that might be what we do this time....sorry i don't have a better answer.
