IP Logging
Randy, I commend your efforts regarding IP Logging. I don't know the story behind some of the animosity, and I don't really care to know. If it helps with the problems, then great. I do think, however, that it would have been nice to get some sort of warning via email, explaining that you were going to begin logging, and what you were going to do with it. I realize that you can't do a whole lot with it, but it would have been a professional courtesy, in my opinion.
Nice board and forum, btw. I lurked for a few months before I began posting, and overall, it is a really helpful and civil group. Thanks. |
Thanks Darren. Actually I have posted an annoucement of this at 10:11 this morning with a follow-up email going out to all registered users. If you'l like to see what our position is on this, please clcik on over to the Announcements page: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum75/HTML/000016.html
Really there's not much behind it - even eBay and other major boards have their IP logged files on. How bad could that be? |
Randy,
First, thanks for providing us with this forum. I can only apologize for those amongst us that cannot behave as if they were a guest in someone's home. None of the posters on this board that behave responsibly have anything to be concerned about with IP Logging. As for the other 1% of us.... well you have to do what you have to do. Thanks again for providing us with this forum. ------------------ danville 1K |
Thanks, Randy. I hope it accomplishes whatever it is intended to do. I don't really care who has my IP. Anyone with enough computer knowledge to be dangerous could probably find it out. Hell, Doubleclick probably logs it 1000 times a day. It was just disconcerting to see it being logged with no email. Remember that many people, including myself, do not read the announcements portion. Maybe that is my shortfall, but I read what interests me. I would expect that most people would, as well. Sorry if I jumped the gun, but as I said, it was just a bit of a shock.
Again, thanks for a great board and forum. Other than the occasional cyber-hooligan, I have learned more from this board than I could have learned from talking to 30 airline-res agents. Or 29, at least. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif |
We did send out an email regarding the change within the hour of posting the announcement on the board. It usually takes an hour or two to complete the blast and that might be the reason for the lateness of your announcement. I do know from other posts on the board that some did receive the email announcement starting on Wednesday morning. I apologize for any shock, as I think not being active in the issues best for all FlyerTalkers would be considered more of a shock. Thanks for the comments about the board and continue to remember - you are the board.

It is a good move and I applaud your step. I am looking forward to the moderator concept review...

Just curious what the IP log on this post says ...
|
I didn't receive the e-mail, though I had already read the announcement. Apparently, it didn't go to ALL registered users.
|
I received the email and agree with the logging. What do we have to hide? I don't have anything, that's for sure.
|
I too did not yet receive the e-mail, though I also had already read the announcement.

Violist - I don't know what the log says about this thread because there's no reason to look at it. The log isn't an open file for anyone to look at. It's there should we need to go back and do research for suspected multiple handles and unwarranted flaming. We are all better if no one ever has to look at it.
Doc and motnot - you might check your profiles. We sent the email only to those who checked off in their profile that they are willing to recieve notices, etc. But based on the sizeable number of emails from those who did receive the email yesterday....it's out there. We will be updating the announcement to explain what an IP address is for those who might have questions. |
I don't know much about TCP/IP, but through the IP, are you able to trace the rough geographical location/host of the person making the post?
I am aware that you can do this through tracert. This concerns me somewhat. Such information should be kept private/anonymous. |
meFIRST: As others have pointed out, IP is not a really reliable piece of information. And any geographical information that can be derived from IP (which is very little) is even more unreliable.
|
Thanks for being a good sport Randy!
