What's going on?

Randy:

What is going in with the "private" chat. We have deduced that every registered FTers received your e-mail. As over 100 people were in the room and it was giving me a head ache, I left and popped backed in. Everything is in disarray, to say the least, and you are no where to be found.

I am leaving chat, so if you appear, I hope someone will post a report here on what was discussed (if there can be a discussion in a group of 100+). If you don't appear, what's going on?

Goodnight,
BB

leroy11 Sep 26, 2000 7:48 pm

Yes, that was a real mess! But, I, too, would appreciate a report if you do appear in the end.

Thanks!

MoonPet Sep 26, 2000 8:04 pm

The chat, which started about 25 minutes late, is a total mess with people questioning the authenticity of "RanFlyer." Are these private chats always so frustrating?

ROADRUNNER Sep 26, 2000 8:06 pm

Please do NOT send me a report! I don't want to waste anymore time on private jets!!

I trust you will be able to identify the perpetrator and issue appropriate punishment. I could not get anyon to help me subdue the one responsible.

jeffreyt Sep 26, 2000 11:32 pm

I guess my request for more notice in advance of these "private" chats is out of the question??? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Dorian Sep 27, 2000 1:24 am

Would have been quite easy for someone else to send out that email and fake being Randy.

Come to think of it....the email wasn't really his 'tone'.

If it was NOT Randy who sent the invitation, then there may be a major security problem with his organization. I noticed there were a number of people in the room who do NOT post their email address. If they received an invitation, then someone had their email address. If I recall, I was required to submit an email address when I joined this site (but not required to put it in my profile).

I am really surprised no "official" comments have been made on this issue.

Boomer Sep 27, 2000 11:26 am

Dorian:

I thought the same thing about the email. Then I compared the headers and routing info to several emails I've received from randy and others at inside flyer. Everything checked out perfectly. The email came from InsideFlyer.

geo1004 Sep 27, 2000 11:37 am

Some people invited to the chat could be subscribers to FlyerTalk email who have opted not to post their email address in their profiles. Relax.

Subject: Frequent Flyer Focus Group

You are invited to participate in a special online focus group
regarding special frequent flyer awards TONIGHT, September 26 at 9 p.m. EST
(8 p.m. Central Time, 7 Mountain Time and 6 p.m. Pacific Coast Time). The
live focus group will be hosted by me, Randy Petersen, and we will be
looking at your interest and responses to a new idea in awards from frequent
flyer programs. While I can't tell you the exact type of awards, they are
airline in nature. We will be asking your opinions on alternative ways to
use your miles for airline transportation to special destinations, the
number of miles that are appropriate and how you in general view the idea of
flying in a charter private jet for an award vs. a regularly scheduled
commercial flight.

I'm hoping you can join me tonight and contribute your thoughts and
opinions. While it may be important to some of you, I will be giving away
bonus frequent flyer miles from the ClickRewards program. The number of
miles and to whom hasn't been decided yet, but I'll be thinking of something
until the chat starts.

Now, if you are interested, it will be held in the "Live Chat" area of
FlyerTalk. There has been a special room set up called "UseYourMiles" (it's
listed along with the normal chat room - TheBuzz) and to enter this private
chat room, use this password - "privatejet".

Again, thanks for your time and I look forward to seeing some of you online
tonight.

Nice to hear from you again, Arturo. Be nice to hear from Randy or someone who can explain the fiasco.

shadow Sep 27, 2000 11:42 pm

I too am signed up for all FT, WebFlyer, TalkMail, etc. stuff. I did not get the invitation either.

FewMiles Sep 28, 2000 9:02 am

Those of you who didn't get the invitation: Please check your FT profiles. There is an option "Allow administrators and moderators to send you email? Yes/No". I'm only speculating that it may have been set to no for those who didn't receive the e-mail. Hope this helps.

I can't see any other correlation between receiving the email and number of posts, date of registration, or anything like that.

FewMiles..

Miles Man Sep 28, 2000 9:12 am

Has there been any official response from the Mileage House Mr. President?

toadman Sep 28, 2000 12:46 pm

Still no word? Very peculiar.

dg1 Sep 28, 2000 1:03 pm

You're right freemiles.. at least in my case it says in my profile no email from adminstrators. This time I really did exclude myself probably http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

That was it. Thanks, FewMiles!

See my note on The Buzz "It was Randy"--for further info.

Randy Petersen Sep 28, 2000 6:14 pm

Please see the "Use Your Miles Chat Explanation" at the top of each forum in the announcements area. Our tech department will bring you up-to-date on the fact that the compnay that provides the technology of the chat session decided, without notice, to release their new version of the software that night which made the version we use unavailable. We didn't know and it was a real problem. Also the fact that many people wanted to engage in "Private Chat" which wasn't possible to any real degree because of all the people on line that night. We only selected a small number of FTers and it was our luck that most of you had nothing else to do. We thought we'd have 18-24 people which would have been a nice group, try 140 aggitated FTers which we don't blame, but consider how I felt with technology that didn't work, no one else in the building but me and all but Dan not home to help and none could have known about the software change anyway. A night to forget I hope for most of you, for me, it will be a night I'll never forget. We are accounting for the miles to all those who attented that night and posted a response to any question.

CameraGuy Sep 28, 2000 6:32 pm

Randy,

Thank you for taking the time to post an explaination.

Michael at WebFlyer Sep 28, 2000 6:37 pm

Anyone interested in the "Official Explanation" can now find it here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum75/HTML/000015.html

I've removed it from the announcements to make room for the next hot topic.

Thanks for your support.

Randy,

I am not sure you got the feedback you really wanted from the chat. I was there... and was honestly confused over whether or not I was answering all your questions.

If you need any more information, please do not hesitate to ask me. I want to add as much value to this board as possible.

William
