Password Protection: Just a test?

A friend of mine told me your Flyertalk password was required to get on LIVE CHAT last night.

I went on Wednesday afternoon. Got on easy.

Was the password thing just a test or a sign of what should come soon?

See, I've boycotted LIVE CHAT becuase of the sick jokes and misuse of my name and identity. I'll spare you my ranting but I want protection before going on again.

Ok, when you log in thru my bookmark for the LIVECHAT site, you get asked for a password.

Otherwise if you go on thru the LIVECHAT link on the Bulletin boards or the LIVECHAT section on teh flyertalk.com menu bar... you get on without a password.

OK, LET'S MAKE IT S.O.P (STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE!)

SORRY BUT I don't want to be a target again.

Well, we're there. My tech guys have the solution you've all asked for and YES, we were testing it. They were waiting for my return from my latest trip to go over with them any details before launching. But truthfully within a day, you can all feel good about your "handles" and your ability to chat - LIVE!

Randy, there is a slight problem with chat, but I e-mailed it directly to you at [email protected] because I don't want any of the "baddies" to take advantage of the problem.

Update: Within an hour I received an e-mail from John at WebFlyer saying the problem has been fixed.

It appears that we are now 100% loophole free.

Enjoy FlyerTalk Live everyone!

Make that 99% loophole free. Quoting myself:

Uhhmm, I got bad news for you folks. The security they implemented is trivial to get
around. I'm not that much smarter than the average bear, but I can STILL login as
anyone I want to login as (just did!)

Now I won't divulge the secret, but let's say that as long as they use a third party
chat vendor, it's going to be difficult to protect. It's not *impossible*, but FYI, it
took me ten seconds to get around the current protection.

It's just like car theft; if they want to get around the protection, they will. You just
have to make it very difficult

Thanks for not posting the way around it here.

Please e-mail John at Webflyer at [email protected]

He is coordinating the password issue.

On behalf of all FlyerTalkers, thanks dg1!
