United miles extention

Randy, can you get us the straight scoop. Can someone, who extended the life of their miles (expiring in 1998) to the end of 1999, extend again such that the miles would not expire until the end of 2000. With people guessing, surmising, and extrapolating various sources, including calling mileage plus, comming up with results that land on both sides of the issue, now is the time for some official help. Too important to make a mistake, and too confusing to do, keep a copy of the "rules" and "request" and then fight with UA if not correct. THANKS.

I have a bit of information that I can share about this promotion. According to our United contact, you cannot extend miles that were extended in 1998. You must have 20,000 miles in your account in order to extend. And the rumor is United may offer some sort of bonus incentive for people who extend early. This last bit is totally unconfirmed, however, and I don't know if it will affect those who have already extended. But it might not hurt to wait to extend your miles until United releases more information. Someone from the InsideFlyer publishing team will post something on the appropriate forums once we have final word, and keep your eyes on ual.com. I hear they are working on posting more info there.

my tip: those who will not have 20'000 miles at the end of 99 , and those who already extended at the end of 98, do it now (make a print out of the online offer which doesn't have any such disclaimers and is legally binding). Later they may correct their inline information (include the disclaimer - and then it is too late).

Thank you Pam. I am somewhat confused. Bonus for doing it early (maybe) but propose one hold off until more information???

Rudi, thank you. You may be right, but I like to play by the rules. Your approach, for me, is too sneaky...if I must keep a copy and then prepare for battle. I believe that many may benefit by your advice however and who know, I may reconsider.

Rudi,

I went to the URL you suggested and found a place to register for the extension, but no rules, terms or conditions or any obvious link to them. Are they somewhere else? If so, could you please post that URL also? Thanks!!

Efrem - you should hread the two threads on this under the United forum where there is a lot more information, comment and opinion.

By the way Webflyer, in cases such as this where there are now four threads on exactly the same offer dotted around the board, is there anyway you can unify them? It concentrates all the information in one place and reduces duplication and/or clutter.

limiting ruels exist (in UA's printed mileage plus newsletter) - but they limit the qualifications for this.

That's just the clue why I recommend to do it now (as UA obviously missed to post any disclaimer online).

Knowing that UA is reading our posts here, I don't feel in any way cheating: they should be thankful for showing them (and us) loopholes etc.

Sorry for the confusion, Ranles. United will allow members to extend their miles through Dec. 31, 1999, so I suggest waiting until more information is available about the terms and restrictions before registering. Also, if United is going to offer a bonus miles incentive for registering early, it might be worthwhile to wait until that is announced before registering.

For those of us who do not have expiring miles this year, can we still register and get the bonus?

Rudi Aug 4, 1999 10:00 am

just register - and we will see (what harm can it do?)

MileKing Aug 4, 1999 9:51 pm

How about just telling UA that if they don't extend your miles you are going over to AA since they no longer expire miles?

Randy Petersen Aug 5, 1999 6:59 am

The straight scoop is that it really doesn't matter, on Aug 5th (maybe the 6th if the PR department can't get the correct verbage right) will announce that they are dropping expiring miles for everyone, not just PE and 1K...... Now how's that for some action?

shadow Aug 5, 1999 7:11 am

Now that, my friends, is action! Thank you, Randy. Guess that will eliminate the need for this thread http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

pgupta011 Aug 5, 1999 7:12 am

Wow that is great news.

Efrem Aug 5, 1999 8:17 am

They probably had to ... American just did. (You need some account activity every three years, but that can be as little as sending flowers. You don't have to actually fly, as you do with Delta, to keep the miles active. Seems pretty reasonable, if only as a way to prune the deceased after a decent interval.)
