Eye spy Hertz tip: miles and points

Randy, I am sure that you (your team in Colorado Springs) did check before posting the newest Eye-spy tip. The discussion under

http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/Foru...ML/000013.html

now seems to show, that the tip doesn't work (at all?, or may be since Hertz took notice of the tip?).

pgupta011 Jun 27, 1999 9:24 pm

According to Hertz rental agent, this was changed 3 months ago, so I doubt if Eye-spy had any effect.

I always double dip for miles and points from Hertz.

Randy Petersen Jun 28, 1999 10:06 am

Actually, it still seems to work because I've heard from several since the EyeSpy that noted that you don't have to go through Hertz reservations to get the double dip, that you can do it off line as well. It looks from other posts that it is still true, it might be, and I hope so, that you got the short end of a service person's comments. For Hertz, they would be ill advised to change this since it might be the only reason that many are still with them since their rates arte among the highest and the bonuses are among the lowest. I would advise Hertz to keep the "secret" and hope that it spreads among the junkies, the ones who really are changing car carriers at will and looking only for the best bonus. The cost would be minimal considering the loss of that business. But, Hertz does march to its own beat..... Thanks for the comment, we'll run it down again.

Randy, I agree with your comments about Hertz's rates, and the advisability of Hertz keeping this "double-dip". The Eye-Spy mentions calling Hertz reservation (1-800-CAR-GOLD) and asking them to put both numbers in. This did not work for me, the agent said "can't do it". I tried again at the Hertz counter, again the agent there said "can't do it". I did not book through the Hertz web site. I don't know what you mean by doing it "off-line"

This thread was a real bust. Does anyone have any authoritative information on this?

I continue to find people who say they have no problem earning both miles and points from Hertz. Here's a tip that just arrived today on the subject and in followup, the guy just got double last week with no problem. He doesn't understand the problems others are having.

"Ah! - here is where I can tell you all this info - This is an add-on to what you already published. With regards to Hertz and earning airline AND hotel points - Their reservation area on their web site also allows you to enter both sets of numbers. No reason to call is there? I have also had trouble with travel agents being able to even submit the airline number - I advise that one check with Hertz it is in there. If you want to check on the website you can - but be careful using the confirmation number the agent gives you - With AmExp the number ends with "CNTR" or similar - just leave that off when the site asks for the reservation number. Also - do not try to change an agent-made reservation on the site - does not work! Hope this helps!"

A number of times I have tried to enter both a hotel frequent stay number and an airline FF number on the Hertz website and it does NOT work.

I hate to sound like I think people are lying, but something more than anecdotal evidence sure would be nice ... or even anecdotal evidence from someone who can confirm that yes, they received airline miles in their account and yes they received Marriott Rewards points in their account. Entering both numbers in a reservation is one thing, getting points in your account is a completely different (and as most frequent flyers have found often seemingly unrelated) matter.

Since the topic is Hertz, anybody know why Hertz doesn't keep FF account numbers in their database, thus forcing customers to provide them for each rental? I guess a small percentage of times people forget to give their FF number and it saves Hertz a few bucks. The savings would seem tiny compared to the cost of all those phone reps enetering 11 digit numbers, mistakes resulting in paper flow, etc.
Maybe their database just doesn't have room.

Hertz is a nightmare now on 2 levels. If they do not get your points or miles you have to send copies of documents to them now and not to the hotel or airline. Plus they give a VERY reduced number of miles for business travelers who are using the company discount. It becomes too costly in time to haggle with them over 125 airline points.

I'm still trying to gete 392 USAir miles from Hertz (or maybe US) since last November. Hertz claims they re-sent the miles to US on May 4 but they have not posted. In the interim, US has changed FF #'s so the original miles might have gone astray. US tells me to wait 2 weeks and if they don't turn up contact Hertz again. Hertz tells me to call US since they already sent the miles.

pgupta011 Jul 27, 1999 9:26 pm

What a mess. Reminds me of my saga with Avis/UA, which ended when I finally sent all documentation to United (more than a year after one of the two rentals not credited) and told them to fix it. To their credit, they did.

BTW, I did get Marriott counterpoints for a Hertz rental roughly a month after my rental. I will wait to see if I get a double dip with United miles as well, but I'm not counting on it.
