I think that it would be useful if you could please compare the 2 dozen or so tax line details to see which changed between the AA and QF purchase screens, and report back.

It may be just a function of the fact that LA and AY had 3 long haul flights, while there were only 2 AA long-haul flights. |
I'm extremely intrigued as to how you've avoided the Airline Fuel Surcharge --- the general source of large differences between quotes (and the purpose of this thread) ---for both itineraries
Would you please clarify again what exactly are the differences between the 2 itineraries in regard to the first 2 legs ---- i.e. dates, times, flight number to NRT, flight number to JFK? |

You might also want to look at posts 6-8 on this thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/onewo...-question.html
In note 11 above, headinclouds reported that he had booked an itinerary where the first two legs were ICN (JL) NRT stopover NRT (AA) JFK and in his note 16, this JL itinerary (ticketed by QF) had no YQ Airline Fuel Surcharge of any kind. I tried replicating that and can't ---- can you? |
Here I am at home convalescing after having my appendix removed (thanks in advance for all your get well wishes:p) - so I decided to do a little study of the Fuel Surcharges that airlines will charge for the same itinerary. The tables below summarise the results
For simplicity I devised an itinerary that keeps the number of segments low – namely LHR-(BA/CX/QF)-HKG-(JL)-NRT-(AA)-JFK-(LA)-SCL-(IB)-MAD-(RJ)-AMM-BUD-(AY)-HEL-LHR Starting from LHR – I produced three itineraries – one with a BA flight for the first segment, then CX then QF. The next itinerary started from HKG flying JL – it ended with a LHR-HKG tagged on the end. And so on, ending with an itinerary starting BUD-HEL and ending AMM-BUDSummary results in local currency: Code:

No idea why I posted what I did:p
