FAQ

When is [insert airline here] joining oneworld???
Which airlines are lined up to join?
See list below and https://www.oneworld.com/member-airlines/overview
Another useful page for official announcements is: https://www.oneworld.com/news-information/oneworldnews

Current members elect (officially announced and currently aligning processes):

WY - Oman Air
Announced 20JUN22, with a target of '2024' - no indication yet when in 2024 this may be. https://www.oneworld.com/news/2022-0...-join-oneworld

Expected members:

EI - Aer Lingus
EI's new owners, IAG (owners of existing members BA+IB), stated before acquisition that they fully intended EI to rejoin, and have restated the intention since completing the purchase. EI has not yet been publically 'invited' by oneworld but should join eventually. When? When it's announced... When will EI become a full member of Oneworld?

I really hope that Air Serbia (JU) will consider joining OW at some point. The Etihad Partners debacle is coming to an end with virtually all members bankrupted and EY itself running around in circles. *A is out of the question due to the strong presence of LH Group in the Balkans, while RO would most likely strongly object to JU joining Sky Team (even though JU cooperates extensively with AF and KL). Most importantly, JU is the only airline in the region offering decent (i.e. daily) connections to virtually every capital and secondary city in the Balkans, the latter being a glaring gap in OW coverage. Finally, there is a historical precedent for JU funneling their US traffic through LHR (even though this has lately shifted to CDG and AMS), so BA would likely get some extra feed from BEG's catchment area, which is significant.

One can dream 😊

JU has a codeshare deal with AY for the HEL-XXX-BEG route and some more routes. Searching for tomorrow, XXX can be ARN, DUS, FRA, GVA, PRG, VIE and ZRH.

Ownership structure
Originally, Air Serbia was jointly owned by the Government of Serbia, which held a 51 percent share interest, and Etihad Airways, which owned a 49 percent share interest and management control.[27] On 30 December 2020, Government of Serbia bought up 31% from Etihad, and thus currently holds 82% share interest.

EY has been virtually kicked out of management, fleet planning has been moved back to BEG and the state is actively increasing its share in the airline. The fleet is typical for Euro-Mediterranean routes, a mix of A320 series and ATRs, plus one A330 for long-haul to JFK, with PEK and YYZ on the cards for 2022. So I don't really see anything in the above post that would prevent them from joining OW?

AA with a $200m investment in G3 Gol.

While it's notionally an LCC, it's more of a hybrid with a loyalty program, some onboard f&b and Economy+ cabins.

It's also more recently transitioned to the SabreSonic booking engine.

It appears Oman Air [WY] is looking to join oneworld - theyve approached Akbar Al Baker to ask for coaching in their application to the alliance.

WY is small, operating 47 jets to 34 destinations, but as an Oman resident, I welcome the added connectivity.

This would be third carrier from the MidEast.

What is the extent of their current airline partnerships? Looking at Wikipedia, it looks as if they codeshare with more Star Alliance airlines than Oneworld airlines, but it doesn't say anything about the extent of those codeshare agreements, so some could just be one or two flights per week. It says that they codeshare with four Oneworld airlines (MH, QR, RJ, UL), four Skyteam airlines (GA, KL, KQ, SV) and six Star Alliance airlines (ET, LH, MS, SQ, TG, TK). With such varied codeshare partners, I wonder if alliance membership is ideal for them.

Anything but EK, it seems. Getting small fish added into the fish bowl seems more ok with the fish in the fish bowl than the introduction of a big fish that frightens the existing big fish in the bowl.

AZ - Alitalia, not IG - Air Italy (former Meridiana).

Corrected.
Albeit if ABB convinces ITA to join, you could argue it's related to both.

Another kind of nothing new article

I suspect it's easier for them to re-join Skyteam. Alitalia had codeshare deals with lots of Skyteam members and many of those could probably easily be resumed under the new management. If they were to join Oneworld or Star Alliance, then they'd have to get brand new codeshare deals and maybe change the network to better align with alliance partners.
