FAQ

When is [insert airline here] joining oneworld???
Which airlines are lined up to join?
See list below and
https://www.oneworld.com/member-airlines/overview
Another useful page for official announcements is: https://www.oneworld.com/news-information/oneworldnews

Current members elect (officially announced and currently aligning processes):

WY - Oman Air
Announced 20JUN22, with a target of '2024' - no indication yet when in 2024 this may be. https://www.oneworld.com/news/2022-0...-join-oneworld

Expected members:

FJ - Fiji Airways
Currently the only oneworld Connect member, FJ stated 28FEB24 that they would like to seek full membership and would apply in Q3 2024.Full membership may still take until 2025/2026. #1489 and https://onemileatatime.com/news/fiji-airways-oneworld/

EI - Aer Lingus
EI's new owners, IAG (owners of existing members BA+IB), stated before acquisition that they fully intended EI to rejoin, and have restated the intention since completing the purchase. EI has not yet been publically 'invited' by oneworld but should join eventually. When? When it's announced... When will EI become a full member of Oneworld?

We can only hope Air China jumps over...

Cathay Pacific is 20% owned by Air China. It doesn't mean Oneworld is completely out of the question.

CA is pretty entrenched with LH and UA - both founding members of *A. It's hard to see them moving over.

OW's coverage in Asia definitely needs improvement. Other than CX's stronghold in HKG, there aren't many alternatives at the moment - especially with JAL still reeling from bankruptcy.

S7 Cyprus arm

Apparently S7 will open a new sub. in Cyprus called Cyprus Airways. As per a.net and other sources.

Would this new airline join oneworld as S7's affiliate?

It is not expansive JV as China does not have open sky with Europe. It is a cooperation involve shared revenue on certain route pairs. It is nothing to do with fleet neutral etc.

I would be seriously worried if CA/UA, CA/AC and CA/LH enter open sky style JV. Currently these JV will favour UA/AC/LH, and CA will find it out the hard way.

This is slightly mangled. S7 cannot be the majority owner of an EU airline. It owns 40% of what is currently known as "Charlie Airlines", with 60% being held by other (European) investors. The airline paid a few million to use the old Cyprus Airways brand, which is now owned by the Cypriot Finance Ministry. S7 is also leasing them their two aircraft.

It will be interesting to see if they join oneworld. Aegean, who also bidded for the use of the Cyprus Airways brand, is their most obvious full service competitor, but realistically I wonder if this start up will want to shoulder the burden of alliance membership.

We might have an airline from Cyprus joining the alliance as an affiliate member. S7 has transferred 2 A319s to Charlie Airlines (trademark Cyprus Airways),an airline where S7 has a 40% share. It is pure speculation of course, but I would not be surprised to see them joining.

UPD:Sorry,just saw the posts above.

AB sells Niki to Etihad

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-ai...-idUSKBN13U157

Air Berlin, which has this year been hit hard by increased competition on routes to tourist destinations in the western Mediterranean, now plans to focus more on long-haul flying in a bid to stem the losses. It is also leasing 40 planes and crew to Lufthansa unit Eurowings.

It said on Monday that Niki would take over its routes to tourist destinations such as the Canary Islands, North Africa and Turkey from the 2017 summer flight schedule.

On 5 December 2016, Air Berlin announced to sell its entire 49 percent stake in its Austrian subsdiary Niki to its own minority owner Etihad Airways.[6][106] In the same time, Niki and Air Berlin will exchange several aircraft to harmonize each fleet.[6] It has also been announced that Niki will take over several routes to Southern European, North African and Turkish leisure destinations from Air Berlin as part of the new joint-venture.[106]

Oh dear. Niki is in oneworld being airberlin's affiliate carrier. Now it is sold to Etihad, what would happen to Niki's membership?
