Because if the US based airlines allowed all their own Elites in the lounges would be massively crowded...

I also think it's unfair ... but I will admit to taking advantage of the rules as a non US/UA Star Gold when travelling domestic over there!

Also don't forget that AA sells AC membership.
If they allowed AA EXPs and PLTs on US domestic flight to AC (or FL), then noone would ever purchase AC membership.

Not at all. There are a lot of people with no status or Gold status who would buy it. Qantas sells Qantas Club access but still provides lounge access to those with Gold (sapphire)/Platinum(emerald) status

Obviously AA would lose revenue from those that currently pay but would not need to
