AONE4 designating extra segments
Does anyone know which specific segment (if there are 5 and only 4 are allowed in a region) is designated as the extra one? Is it the last one in sequence or can I designate any segment as being the extra one? The reason is that of the 5 segments that I want, only 4 have first class (the 3rd in sequence has only business class). I understand that I may buy extra segments in a lower class and am trying to work out if I can pay for a business class extra segment (to cover the 3rd segment in sequence), rather than a first class one (which relates to the last segment in sequence). Sorry if this sounds confusing.

The 1st 4 sectors should be the free sectors
Sector 5 should be the paid sector since it is the extra sector Dave |
Yes, you can.
In my experience of AONE3, I bought two extra segments. (In total, I have 3 return trips of HKG-NRT) Some of NRT-HKG segment have first class seats. I selected a business class flight in mid itinerary such as HKG-NRT A NRT-HKG D HKG-NRT A NRT-HKG A HKG-NRT D NRT-HKG A |
Dave Noble has stated what is usually the AA rtw desk's interpretation of the rule. Others, including Wasabi, have reported being able to designate segments with BA(at times) and on occasion with AA.
See, e.g.,: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...extra+segments |
I've been able to designate segments on a QF ticket also...

Unfortunately, AA (Mindpearl in CPT) has taken the less accommodating position. They say, "additional segments paid will be calculated in the sequence booked. i.e. after the "free flights" . We won't be able to designate a specific segment as the extra segment."

I bought two RTW from MINDPEARL and can confirm the above poster comments about extra segments.

I've found Mindpearl in CPT (no experience with other Mindpearl offices) to be very easy to work with; however there does seem to be evidence that they interpret some rules differently than one might encounter elsewhere. Oneworld is not monolithic, and that's an understatement.
My recommendation is just to add (mentally) an extra US$125 to the price you're quoted, then have the ticket re-issued to your liking as soon as possible after your first flight, based on an itinerary completed and koshered with the AA RTW desk or its equivalent. Less stressful for all concerned, and the $125 is a cheap price to pay for getting it just the way you want it - choice of carriers or codeshares, extra segments, blah blah. |
