Is the tool simply using the information available on the QF website? If so, what is the advantage of using the tool instead of the website directly?

For starters, convenience, no need to manually login to the website every time, speed (results typically appear within 3-4 seconds), better format, ability to filter results, as well as the ability to check award availability across all 3 alliances in one place with just a few clicks of a mouse.

But to use the tool for this purpose, you have to enter your QF member number and password, correct?

tautology

I believe this to be true. However, it will search while you are away from your PC using your profile.

Yes, but only once.

I did some dummy searches yesterday on the QF website to see the sort of F availability that would be around at short notice - it was frustrating on the QF website that it didnt show all classes by default - not if I could just get KVS to show a range of dates...

Not sure that the lack of entering in a number/pin on QF is a big deal - I have it stored in my cookies and have not had to enter it for a long time.

Will the tool support cities not on the drop-down list on the QF site?

One-ways like SCL-SYD, EZE-SYD which are only on the drop-downs as returns? No, didn't work for me, I had to go back to the Qantas awards page and look at the avaiability of returns SYD-SCL-SYD etc.

The Tool itself does not impose any limitations as to the origin/destination cities. However, at this time, any limitations/restrictions, imposed by the QF engine do apply.

As of V3.0.2, the Tool is no longer subject to the those restrictions, and you can search for availability ex-CPT, SCL, EZE (which must be entered as BUE), and other airports:
