DONE4 Baggage Limits
 

I know there has been a lot of talks on the BA board about this, but when I went to LHR 2 weeks ago the F Class agent can't give me a definite answer so I want to clarify this.

On a DONE4 you can check in 2 pieces @ 32Kgs each on the following airlines:

1) CX
2) QF
3) JL
4) IB
5) AY
6) ML
7) RJ

However on BA what is the deal
3 Bags @ 23kgs or 2 Pieces @ 32kgs each??

On AA I know for domestic they have a stupid rule regarding some weight restriction, but I never really got asked to pay the excess as I will be in F Class anyway for US Domestic (even if they asked, isn't it a small charge anyway?)

What happens with you interline with another OneWorld carrier.

I spoke to the CX CSO and they are not aware of the BA's new luggage system. They said if the ticket states 2PCS then it is 2PCS @ 32kgs each. and they will tag it right through and not charge extra.

In cases like this with differing allowances, it depends on the airline that you check your bags in with, at each point along the way. Just because yesterday/last week/whenever you were within the allowance checking in with, for example, AA does not mean you can get the same bags within the allowance checking in with BA.

Note in some places (US springs to mind) where you need to take checked bags through customs at first port of entry, it gets tricky. If bags are redeposited at a central screening/transfer desk then probably okay even if over the free allowance of the next airline. But if bags are redeposited at check in counters then you may find the next airline wants to charge excess baggage (if over their free allowance) despite the bags already being tagged through.

Along similar lines, any advice would be appreciated. Will be flying SYD-HKG-FCO as part of a DONE4. Will connect on Alitalia (separate ticket, of course) in FCO to CTA.

I assume I will transit customs at CTA - correct? If so, bags should be checked through. Any problems with allowance for carry-on?

To make this a bit more complex, Ms SeAAttle will fly into FCO on AA (from ORD) and join me for the flight to CTA. Same rules apply?

On my DONE3 during last couple of weeks in NA I was asked once to pay for the heavy -tag in YYZ. Everywhere else not an issue, not even a mention about a heavy luggage, they just put the heavy -tag there, but this guy in Toronto check in was clearly having a bad morning and couldn't allow us to check in unless we pay 25$ CAD.

Strictly speaking AA can charge the 25USD, but then again if you read your fare rules correctly it did say baggage will be under the piece system, but does not specify the weight!

At least it is only 25USD each and it is possible to pay, on BA I think you can't even pay if you are over 23Kgs. It must be spilt into 3 bags!

So much for OneWorld.

Remember that even though their limit is 23KG until September BA are still currently allowing up to 32KG per bag (albeit with a snotty printed tag telling you that your bag is over weight but they will let you off this time, but come September etc).

After September it will be great fun to be told to re-pack (purchase a new bag?)
and any bags over will be charged 120 UK pounds (??) long-haul before you can get on the plane.
