No d, no L = no go?
 
On a D ticket, if neither D nor L is available on a flight, am I SOL?

Assuming that you are talking about an ATW ticket ( lots of other tickets use D class ) then unless it is one of the exceptions (such as American Eagle that books into Y or AA US domestics that book in A) then you need either D or L class in order to book

Exactly. No D or L means you are not getting on that flight.
