MFUing a LONE4

Sorry if this is a dumb question but:

If I buy a LONE4 ticket and want to do a MFU to Club does there have to be award availability on every leg of my journey?

Seems to me that, with almost zero availability on many southern hemisphere routes anyway, the chances of putting together a workable itinerary are about as good as being made the next pope!

Thanks for any help, Pirate

AFAIK you can't upgrade to Club, only to WT+

You can buy the OWE upgrade to WTP (AUD 600 LHR-SIN etc. and AUD 900 LHR-SYD etc.) and then MFU from WTP to Club. No MFU from L to J is possible (probably why BA created WTP, to prevent such upgrades).

The MFU rules depend upon whether you use BAEC or Asiamiles to do the upgrade. The Asiamiles rules are a lot more generous, btw.

I think there is a :) missing in that statement. :)

The ticket have to be purchased from BA in order to MFU, doesn't it?

Yes, you have to purchase the ticket directly from BA if you want to MFU. Having it issued on BA stock through a travel agent is not good enough.

You cannot MFU a RTW ticket at all.

One of the fundamental rules is that in order to the MFUable it has to be on a return itinerary. Also, it has to be on BA metal.

It would be great if BA did bring in the ability to MFU BA segments but I don't think we'll ever see that.

I also think the rules state that the entire itinerary has to be on BA metal for you to be able to MFU.

This is probably the wrong forum to be going over this, but this rule has recently been relaxed so you can now MFU a BA + other carriers itinerary (but, obviously, the MFU applies to the BA sectors only).....

Note that most of the prior comments are specific to BAEC and do not apply to Asiamiles. The sane plan is to use Asiamiles for this type of upgrade (and not BAEC); however I have never MFU'd on BA as I buy the class that I want to fly, and I know BA is a pain to deal with for upgrades. Asiamiles is supposed to do this pretty well, fwiw.

But again only on round-trips. You can't do one-way upgrades on BA using AsiaMiles.

But it can be upgraded on CX? So the solution is to fly CX LHR-HKG-SYD instead of BA and use the upgrade from Y to J (bypassing the whole WTP nonsense).

Maybe we need a thread on how to upgrade OWE tickets.

CX: Asiamiles
AA: AAdvantage miles or eVips
BA: none
QF: QFF miles
LA: ?
IB: none (?)
AY: none
MA: by invitation only (Emerald on MA)
RJ: ?
JL: none (?)

Thanks guys that confirms what I feared.

Looks like its "Plan B" then; use the miles for an award flight to MRU and then do the decent thing and stump up for a AONE4.

Cost will be surprisingly close since I was originally budgeting to start at LHR and needed to buy in 20,000 miles for my notional upgrade.

And by the time I get back I'll have the miles back in the kitty!^
