You can backtrack on an xONEx and fly in any direction barring transcon restrictions. You only have 5 segments in ur NA itn as far as I can see. You're allowed 20 in total with a max of 6 'free' segments in NA. To REALLY maximise miles, why not make JFK ur first port of call, then do ur one transcon to LAX. JFK-LAX-ORD-PIT-ORD-PHL-ORD - 6 segments. :)

The number of seats varies by flight and even date, but for AA codeshares on QF in L it is typically between 100 and 50 seats per flight, or about 500 seats per day; so maybe a bit more inventory than you were imagining. I've rarely seen a flight where the code share was sold out (usually both are available or both are sold out).

Thus you learn, for example, that Europe also has backtracking restrictions of a sort - you can only do two segments to/from london and a bunch of places such as moscow or dubai (see sticky!).

Between that and the dead handy mileage monkey tool at http://slfft.allhyper.com/ you really have a good grip on options.

One way of thinking of an xONEx is to seperate the skeleton of the trip consisting of the international segments and any must have segments from the padding. Work them out separately. The padding for me is about:
- know how on the rules
- know how on where OW flies
- places I like the sound of getting a "free" trip to
- my time constraints (*)
- my comfort level for long-haul and/or spinning from airport to airport
- possibly know-how on alternative flight options (**)

* - don't forget the idea of breaking up a xONEx with additional flights. So for ex-Australia you might fly to North America, Europe and then Asia before separately arranging a return from Asia to home and using the rest of your xONEx for a later trip.

** - I may do lhr-sin on a xONEx for the miles, then buy sin-hkg myself to not "waste" a segment on a short flight when I can easily get better use from it.

Was referring to NA actually. Sorry for not being clear.
edited to add: Oh and for NA there are restrictions with HNL and ANC of course - I'm sure the details are in the sticky.
