CX Opup for AA Emerald
Very pleased to be given a complimentary upgrade from Y to J upon check-in here at Changi (Singapore) on a Cathay Pacific segment to HKG. My next segment, long haul to SFO, is ticketed in business but this first flight was booked in coach.
My next four hours will be far more pleasant, thanks to a OW airline being willing to op-up elites of partner airlines. |
CX seems to be the best of the OW airlines at honouring OW obligations. And they do it graciously, making their best lounges available for Emeralds, etc., unlike some other less gracious airlines. Given a choice I always choose CX, in part to reward their behaviour (and in part to reward myself, as CX has a better product).

Absolutely. To add to my pleasure, I received an op-up on the second segment too! J->F and really enjoyed my transpacific sleep.
SQ has outstanding service and attitude but is somewhat the opposite of CX in that SQ works very hard to minimize upgrades in order to protect the image of the premium classes, whereas CX does seem more open to rewarding frequent passengers. |
Yes, I really give kudos to CX for this also. Along with the excellent J experience, it's one reason I fly it whenever I can.
In the past few years I've been op-uped twice, J to F, on CX HKG-SFO. No chance of that happening on SQ. In fact, even as a UA 1K (same as AA EXP/Emerald) I haven't had any op-ups in longer than I can remember. Of course, CX J is nothing to complain about, and will get even nicer as CX improves all three cabins over the next year or two. |
Enjoy the J->F op up's while you can. It will be harder to come by once CX introduces the 77W on their Transpacific runs when the aircraft is delivered in late fall.
There will only be 6 First Class seats on the 77W. ... CX should receive up to 6 773ERs by the end of 07/early 08. Premium configuration is F6/J57/Y238 - total of 301 seats Currently CX plans to deploy all the 773ERs on North American route first, in the order of: 1. JFK; 2x daily non-stop 2. YYZ; begin with 3 weekly non-stop eventually to daily 3. LAX 4. SFO 5. YVR |
