I think this has been mentioned before, did a search using "South African" in the forum in general and in the thread re: 1W awards but could not find it

Can one use this South African operated QF coded flight on a 1W award with AA miles?

QF codeshares on SA metal went the day SA joined *A.

If you mean that QF no longer codeshares on SA-operated flights PER-JNB vv, this is false. QF303/304 operate 5 times weekly at the moment.

If you mean that this flight was once available for redemption using AA miles but is no longer, I don't doubt that it isn't currently available (no redeeming on a partner's codeshare on a non-partner, in general); it would surprise me a lot if it ever was. Was it?

I don't believe it ever was on an award, but it was and still is available for a global explorer.

You are right there. I do recall reading on the QF forum that codeshares had been taken away too although now I think about it I suspect that QF got rid of all the SYD-JNB codeshares only.

QF used to allow both miles accrual (non-status though) and miles redemption on SA but that was definitely dropped the day SA joined *A.

SA still codeshares with QF on this route.

...

The codeshares never can go away as they are specified in the route authority for both QF and SA. Apparently both governments were concerned about having adequate service, and SA back then didn't have the planes to fly JNB-SYD non-stop (did fly JNB-PER-SYD but that wasn't profitable), thus this arrangement came to be (codeshares, with QF staying out of PER-JNB service) and etched in stone by the governments. It is a case where airline and national interests had priority over alliance interests.
