oneworld lounge access rules

Today I was granted lounge access to the Qantas club in Sydney's terminal 3 (domestic), flying SYD-PER in J the middle of a DONE4. I asked if the boarding card made me eligible to get in and was told it didn't (as expected); then I asked them to check my BA status (I've got a blue card but have attained silver while travelling). A few taps and presumably the whole PNR came up, because I was then told that my itinerary was enough to let me in, despite not being in transit at either end of this particular flight.

Is that right, or was I just lucky? I thought it was only status and the immediate flight that had any bearing. Not that I'm complaining

QF rule not OW let you in

QF has a non-OW rule that all international tickets in J or F have QP access (while domestic J tickets do not). Since your domestic J segment was part of an international J ticket, you were entitled to access (this also applies to awards).

Ah, I see. Thanks for clarifying :)

How did you get your bp in the first place? I normally hand my 20-segment ticket to the agent at the check-in desk, who has invariably picked up on the fact that the QF segment was part of a larger itin. Another slight downside to e-tickets?

Presumably at check-in. I'm guessing the conversation outlined in the original post was with the lounge dragon, not with a check-in agent.

That's right. I have a paper ticket and checked-in but wasn't given a lounge invitation or anything at that point. I didn't query it because I didn't think I was allowed in!

The BP on it's own would not make you eligible to get in.

In your case, the presentation of one of two additional facts in conjunction with your BP enabled entry. These have already been posted in this thread. To Summarise:
  • BA Silver Status
  • International Intinery
By the way, was your BA Silver status printed on your BP?

My BA number was on there but nothing saying the tier.

On a related topic, I'm traveling in business class on Iberia out of JFK. I believe that's terminal 7. I'm platinum on AA. Will I be allowed to use the BA Terraces lounge in T7?

Sure, even without status flying IB J gets you J lounge access (IB uses the BA Terraces lounge). If you had been flying Y on IB you would still have lounge access, based on AA Plat status. The J lounge is virtually identical to the F lounge at JFK (as the real F lounge for BA is the Concorde Room, and not the F lounge). Not sure if IB pays for pre-flight dining at JFK (probably not); if they do, eat in the lounge, it will be better than the IB J food served inflight.

Thank you. I know that BA can be restrictive in some lounges, so it's nice to know we're good to go. And thanks for the tip about pre-flight dining. If it's an option, we will definitely avail ourselves.

As far as I know, IB J passengers do not get pre-flight dining. CX & QF F passengers may get that service depending on the time of departure.

Which probably meant it had not updated. Generally I would suggest that when you go up a tier to ask the airline you are about to fly on to remove your FF number and then key it back in to force the system to update and recognise your new tier.
