also could anyone tell me how one goes about choosing the best alliance.

I'd suggest you start by reading the sticky FAQ regarding the OW RTW product, I am sure there's similar information available for other global alliances as well...you question regarding choosing the best alliance is not something anyone can really answer...depends on your location, preferences, frequent routes, FF program(s) best suiting your travelling etc...

Happy discovery and welcome to FT!

The Star Alliance sells mileage based RTWs. The OneWorld alliance sells continent based RTWs.

One World also has mileage based RTW - Global Explorer. However in most cases the One World Explorer (xONEx) is the better one world RTW option due to the limitations of Global Explorer.

Taxes and fuel surcharges also get added to the basic list price. These vary by destination & airline.

And there are many, many other RTWs that exists with two or three partner airlines that may be from opposing alliances. These are great if you don't have many cities you're going to but are slightly more restricted because most backtracking isn't allowed. But what is great are the fares - they are normally lower than these alliance based carriers.

See UA/EK, SQ/VS, SQ/SQ, SQ/VS/NZ, EK/KL combinations amongst a few.
