Max miles on an AONE3
 

I believe I've seen this discussed, but the search function seems to be down.

Can someone recommend AONE3 itineraries ex-BOS if the goal is to maximize miles. I think I'd like to start out BOS-JFK-YVR-LHR to get those great CX and BA segments, and I need layovers in BKK and SIN, but beyond that I'm wide open.

[Also, if I do start out, BOS-JFK-YVR-LHR, am I correct that I can still return from Asia on CX888 without violating the one transcon rule, even though it routes HKG-YVR-JFK?]

Well, this isn't a direct answer to your question, but it does give you a benchmark to compare against:

Yes, your assumption about CX888 is correct so long as it is a single coupon HKG-JFK.

Off the top of my head, for summer, and no idea if the schedules work...

But for max miles and max CX F experience you'd be better off taking a cheap ticket on Air Asia or something for SIN-BKK-SIN and replacing the HKG-BKK-HKG with NKG-NRT-HKG (for F) or HKG-KHI/CMB-HKG for max miles, but only in J.

I'm currently playing with an AONE3 myself, and realistic maximum mileage is around 50,000. By realistic I mean stopping over in places you actually need to go, and not making the whole thing a mileage run. Another thing to consider is that a plain xONE3 will have a maximum of 17 segments, so you could buy another three to gain additional mileage or flexbility.

For maximizing miles the starting point is taking long intercontinental flights, e.g. HKG-JFK, LAX-LHR, LHR-SIN.

This is very helpful; thanks. I haven't flown QF in years (I flew LAX-SYD-LAX in F on QF about 10 or so years ago); when flying from LHR to Asia, is there any reason to consider one of the QF flights to SIN or BKK for variety, or is it not worth having to give up the CX LHR-HKG flight?

My experience of QF first is getting a little dated (although I hope to do the JFK-LAX shortly), so I'll leave others to comment. I'm a bit of a CX addict, but no OW F cabin is less than very nice.

We recently were able to upgrade a DONE4 JFK-SYD to F on QF. It was a treat. Earlier in the same trip CX op-uped us HKG-FCO from D to First. I'd have to say that CX was better than QF in F, but they were both exceptional in their own way. If you want the BEST in catering (including wines) do the CX trip. CX also have the better and more voluminous amenity kit. Either way, you'll have fun. Only trouble is that I suspect either airline will rush through the evening meal just to get everyone off to sleep - only to have to wake them up again to do the full on breakfast service. Maybe better to do the midday QF run ex LHR to get the full treatment.

Er, og, you missed out on one fundamental aspect of the F service (on CX at least): you can choose exactly when and what you want to eat - you don't need to be rushed at all. On the HKG-LHR that I took on Friday there were people eating all sorts of things from all over the menu throughout the flight.

I prefer CX F over QF.
QF is not bad at all, but the seats are smaller (14 in the nose of the 747 vs. 12 on CX), the food on CX (i love asian food) is better and the service is less consistent than on CX.

I would not go this far as taking a connection on CX vs. a non stop on QF, but when i plan my trips i try to optimize them for CX use.
