HNL to SYD on QF4... On a 767??? !!!
 

Doing a RTW DONE4 (honeymoon) for myself in January and using points for my new wife. One of the flights we have back from the USA is from HNL to SYD on the 5th of Feb. I have just been informed that instead of the 747 I was told I would have on this flight, with a real business class, we actually have a 767, with a domestic business class...

This means no TVs, not even dreamtime seats for the 10+ hour flight!

Has anyone flown this? How was it?

Does anyone have any other suggestions of getting from HNL to Australia... we have to be back in Australia on the 6th or 7th... doesnt matter if its MEL, SYD or BNE.

Are you sure that its 767 with domestic business class and not a 767 with international business class? The way to tell is international config has no "B" seats in business (ie A is both window and aisle seat).

No real options on a xONEx from HNL. IIRC the Air Pacific flights via Fiji are not allowed (but are on Global Explorer).

I came up with an option of CX to HKK and then into SYD... couldnt think of other options.

You are right through, it is an international business class service. Thats at least a start, but still, compared to CX business, or a Skybed etc *grin*

To clarify - there are 2 seating configurations in the QF 767s. One is used for international (predominantly - sometimes get lucky for domestic), the other is for domestic.

The domestic config is not as nice a seat, no personal tv and 2-2-2 layout, whereas international config is nicer seat (but not a skybed), with personal tv and 1-2-2 layout.

Aren't similar Dreamtime seats used on both the internationally configured 763s and 743s? Non-SkyBed equipped 743s were previously used on the HNL-SYD run.

So, how does CX get to HKK - Hokitika, New Zealand? :D

I assume you mean HKG, but CX does not fly from HNL to HKG or from HNL at all. But it sure would be nice if they did.

And yes, according to ExpertFlyer, the seat map shows it as a 1-2-2 config.

Who told you it was "Domestic"?

As per my response to your question on the QF board, it is currently scheduled to be an International Configuration 763 (PDF seatmap in link).

Firstly, a few mistakes on my part. Yes, I meant HKG, not HKK. Also, the option Qantas gave us was instead of LAX, HNL, SYD, that the other option was LAX, HKG, SYD. But alas, no seats, and as per usual, no seats LAX - SYD.

As for the domestic business class, the Qantas agent told me that only 3 of the flights had a Int business class, and they were on the 747, which had no avail. So, she said we would have to go on the 767 which was a domestic style service.

There is every chance I messed this up when talking with her, but after my Tokyo experience business class, my mind was scared *g*

The 743 that normally does the flight and the 767 have nearly identical dreamtime seats. The 743 has a larger PTV and in seat phone and power while the 767 doesnt. Regardless, unless all your christmas' are coming at once and the flight was upgraded to a 744 there was never a chance of a skybed for that flight. :(

Personally I prefer a int config 767 over the 743 any day.

I haven't taken that flight but on a BNE-WLG flight two weeks ago in business on a 737 (that's right!) they gave us personal DVD players and a holder full of QF DVD's with the current movie selection offered in other international business class flights.

In fact, the Qantas website lists this collection to watch on that flight this month.

So TV or not TV, you'll have plenty of choices to watch. Since the regular enterntainment system doesn't let you rewind/fastforward/pause I felt this was a superior system. :D

*N.B. The players only play the special airline DVD's so you can't bring along anything and watch it on these players.

Sadly QF is only offering the DVD Players on Trans Tasman Flights... It is to compete with NZ's 772 and EK.
