OWE Extra NA segments
As a note to those planning a DONE/AONE, you can purchase
extra segments in NA in either F/J or Y. However, if you save the money and buy in Y, they book into full-Y and thus on AA you get upgraded to F/J for free upon request, given that you are Elite. Therefore, paying extra for the F/J segments is probably not worth it, as you can choose which NA segments to book in Y, based on the ability to upgrade. |
I guess I have to wonder about this as Y is a booking class that is not used for XONE purposes. Are you saying that you recently purchased an XONE and you also purchased additional coach segments and those additional segments were booked into Y and not L (which is the booking class for coach segments for XONE purposes)?

That's not a foregone conclusion - at least some rate agents think the rule is that the extra segment(s) must be the last ones in order. Like too many things about the OWE, one airline or agent does it this way, the next one does it that way. |
Unless the rule has changed in the past month, the extra "Y" segments book into L on AA and into Y on AE and AC flights -- a great benefit on the CRJs as this makes for easy availability, but not a more comfortable seat or flight. The L can be upgraded per normal Aadvantage rules (including the 100 hour EXP free upgrade) but doesn't book automatically into First. AA seems to let you pick which sectors to buy, while BA insists it is always the last ones that are "extra". Nothing in the rules actually clarifies this from what I can tell and the results are random. Buying extra segments is still worthwhile in some cases as you get a fully changable and even refundable ticket for the extra segments (only), but obviously this eats into the 20 sector limit.
