Evidently purchasing in cities such as Cario offer a significant discount in purchase price.

What are the rules governing where you can depart from? Do I have to make my first flight within the country of purchase? i.e. Egypt, or can i depart from anywhere within that continent - i.e. UK - or more specifically Heathrow!

I am planning a RTW trip departing Jan 2006 and have a holiday in late Oct in Egypt booked, was hoping to pick up a cheap ticket there and depart from LHR in Jan -> Is this possible?

It is not, unfortunately. Your trip must start in CAI.

(In fact, you _could_ pay in CAI and start in LHR but then the agent in CAI would have to charge you LHR prices)

You could always use your holiday (charter?) flight only on the outbound leg and travel back home using your ex-CAI RTW ticket. You can then continue your RTW trip later (in Jan) from LHR.

Not just CAI - you could start at Sharm-el-Sheikh (SSH), Hurghada (HRG) or Alexandria (HBE) using GB Airways or BMed. It's the country of origin, not the airport that matters.
