Airline call signs
 

It's nice we don't get too quickly dinged by the mods for off-topic, 'cause my tail would be fried by this one. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/hub/A698231 is a list of airline call signs. I'm not sure it's too authoritative - e.g they list speedbird for BA, and afiak they only used that for Concorde, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, nothing to do with OW, but this being a semi hotbed of aviation interests I thought some of you might be amused.

Speedbird is indeed correct; used for almost all British Airways mainline flights. Interesting website, thanks JohnAx

I thought that Speedbird was the standard call sign for BA.

I believe that the term Speedbird pre-dates Concorde by many years. It's the name of the logo that BOAC used (was a stylized bird in flight) and was retained when BOAC and BEA (and others?) came together to form BA.

(There was also an old airplane named Speedbird, but I dunno if that's related.)

I have actually heard this on the scanner, ATC gave taxi clearance to "Birdseed 10" - he quickly corrected himself.

As for off-topic, this is nothing compared to what we get up to in another forum. :D
