Trying to do business with AA during this last week ranks, for me, in terms of comfort, right up there with my last visit to the urologist.

What are the implications of open segments on airport taxes?
 
I remember someone telling me to avoid having a stopover in LHR unless you really need it. It looks like it raises the tax to the tune of $50 or so. So by making all segments open are you not paying more taxes? I assume when you make a segment open, then you are paying the stopover taxes for all the segments involved. Any insight into this...

It is up to you. When you give the airline your itinerary you designate which destinations will be connections and which stopovers. Taxes, therefore, will be based on your choice, for each sector, even if they are open.

You can stopover in LHR if you want... just as long as the next destination is not a non-EU country.. as the taxes jump if you're in premium class to a non EU destination from about GBP20 to GBP40!
