First xONEx for a decade - methodology?
Dear FT RTW experts: I’m planning a DONE4 RTW and am very out of practice (I did several a decade ago…).. Could you please let me know any obvious errors in my approach?
- origin OSL (I need to go there later this year and it also seems well priced for DONE4, cheaper than LHR, HEL, CPH) - D rather than A because first class isn’t on enough legs to make this worthwhile - rough routing OSL-Seoul-Perth-SYD-BNE-SFO-New Orleans-BOS-LHR; later LHR-OSL - used the “beta” oneworld planning tool, a bit weird the way it messes with dates but it claims to have found valid availability - SYD to US is problematic but I think I can find D class by going via SYD and/or LAX - checking with expertflyer for D class availability and adjusting dates accordingly - then I will call Finnair in Norway to book over the phone — I can apparently send the routing from the planning tool but it is refusing to let me choose some flights that I know have lots of availability (eg SYD-BNE open all day but it only lets me have 0600). Are there are any new quirks - or new tools - since I last did this? I’ve had a read through the stickies in the forum but there are so many now…! On those routes are there any catches I should look out for (eg particularly crap aircraft I should avoid)? Trip will be in April and May. Goal of the trip is to visit places not to build up miles or status. Thanks for any pointers. |
"OSL-Seoul-Perth-SYD-BNE-SFO-New Orleans-BOS-LHR; later LHR-OSL" [ OSL-ICN-PER-SYD-BNE-SFO-MSY-BOS-LHR;LHR-OSL ]
Some of those do not exist as non stop flights. But you have segments to spare. Link -- > A map from the Great Circle Mapper - Great Circle Mapper Example- QF only operates BNE-LAX. And SYD BNE can be cheap to buy with cash. Wikipedia airport entry generally lists airline & routes, but not always up to date or list future routes/routes to be deleted https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incheo...tional_Airport And https://www.flightconnections.com/ And https://flights.oneworld.com/ |

OSL-(HEL)-ICN-(HKG)-PER-SYD-BNE-(LAX)-SFO-(DFW)-MSY-(DCA)-BOS-LHR-OSL and I’m also considering going BNE-AKL-(NAN)-SFO as an alternative to BNE-LAX-SFO. thanks for the links- had forgotten about some of those. |

Thanks for highlighting NAN. I found a simpler routing and am now planning
OSL-(HEL)-ICN-(HKG)-PER-BNE-AKL-SYD-(LAX)-SFO-(DFW)-STL-BOS-LHR-OSL which removes the NAN issue. I've opted for AA BOS-LHR (first time for 20 years) partly because I'm a bit fed up with BA and partly because as I am now booking with AA RTW desk (they were very professional; AY refused to do it) they require some AA metal across at least one ocean. And QF BOS-LAX because the A320 business seats look better than the AA product. Rest of the flights don't have much choice. Again, let me know if there is anything you spot! Thanks [edit sorry, meant A380 not 320] |

QF SYD-SFO, while not operating now will come some time. At times flights on a codeshare can be a better earner to a ffp, than the native flight. |
