Qantas first class lounge Sidney vs Cathay Pacific The Pier first class lounge

which one is better and why?

The better one is the one in the city where you are located at the time.

A year ago I would have leaned toward the Pier at HKG, but not these days with the thimbleful catering that has characterised the CX offering this year.

I did both yesterday. I would say that The Pier F Lounge, much like CX, is a shell of it's former self. While the QF F Lounge is a little scruffy, the menu, wines and service are pretty similar to what they were when it first opened. While it's a personal thing, the decor at The Pier F probably wins however everything else and specifically the service and food has declined so much in the past year that I won't go out of my way to visit it any longer. So better food, wine and service at QF First Sydney. Better decor at The Pier F Hong Kong.

Not necessarily.

There is no CX Lounge in SYD. The Pier is in HKG, QF First is in SYD. There is a QF Lounge in HKG, but it has no F section - it is just a very solid J Lounge.

Not really a comparison.
Two different airports, markets, and utilization.

Pier F: One of 5 premium lounges in HKG (or is it 6, if you count QF), so the traveler is not boxed into using it when departing HKG.
QF F: The only OW premium loung in SYD, so the traveler has no alternative for other OW international lounges when departing SYD.

Pier F: Food is, meh (not memorable), but drinks are good, no runway view, but literally next to immigration (and gates for US/London flights)
QF F: Food is good (especially the breakfast), drinks are basic, nice runway view, and tucked away behind duty free shops.

Pier F: Tailored towards the Asian market, so decor is maintained well (appearances matter to the clients).
QF F: Tailored towards the Aussie market, so decor is (for lack of a better expression) left to age gracefully.

Pier F: Mostly serves transit pax, (to/from mainland/USA/rest of Asia), so its facilities for transit (showers/cabanas) are great for long layovers.
QF F: Mostly serves OD pax, so nothing great for long layovers.

All in all, "better" = the lounge you can access that is convenient to you/on your travel routes.
Considering I live in Tokyo, I wouldn't go out of the way to route my journey via SYD just to go to the QF lounge (duh!),
but I would definitely go out of the way to route my journey via HKG just to go lounge hoping in all the 6 lounges in HKG!

Don't you mean "Wing F" in relation to immigration and US/UK flights?

I was thinking the same thing. CX U.S. bound flights usually leave from gates 1-4.

Tokyoite Jul 15, 19 1:33 am

Stand corrected. Yes, the Wing and not the superior Pier up terminal.

No runway view? The Wing has great tarmac and runway views.
