If i fly cai/lhr/syd/SIN > onwards to US
Does the stopover on the way to Syd count as me entering Asia and therefore i must use my segments there before i carry on to syd?
i want to get to Syd in time for christmas and then return to asia to use my segments.?
i assume i would get varied answers from BA.

The rules are clear on this. You may TRANSIT Asia on the way to or from SWP and it doesn't "count" as your Asia entry. Transit is defined as less than 24 hours in SIN/BKK/HKG. So if, for example, you take a single plane/flight number LHR-SYD then what you propose is perfectly OK.

If you're doing this in First then I would recommend CX via HKG as the best way LHR-SYD unless you are up to your limit on segments (this would have to be two, whereas LHR-SYD on BA/QF would be one).

Yes it will be in F Class. i am going to get to cai next month over a long weekend.
Will BA in CAI allow me to book cai-lhr-syd -SIN .
only and leave the rest open. ? it seems that most people book the whole itinary at once, i don't understand the benefit??

You will need to specify open segments to complete the RTW. They need this to determine the number of continents for pricing purposes. Thus, add sin-hkg-lax-lhr-cai. You can always change this later and you do not need to actually book these latter segments.

So it is better to get the itinary done before hand and change the dates later?? so all the taxes are done before hand. what is easier for the cai office in your opinion?

Cairo will positively love you if you fax them a sheet with all the details as clearly as possible - each segment in order, transit or stop, the number of each segment as it counts toward that continent's total, and in europe the count of stops. You don't have to do that if it's a chore for you, but if you have it anyway, you'll get "points" should you ever need to ask a favor of them.

It appears there may be some confusion here... whenever you issue a OWE ticket you must specify an entire valid routing for the number of continents you have selected. Issuing it "Open" simply means not specifying a date for each segment - the only one you have to specify the date for is the first one. There is no requirement for the reservations to be made at the time of ticketing (except the first segment).

i see so open - is not make up your destinations as you go.within a one3,4 etc but open date.. and therefore the taxes etc are all paid up upon ticketing..
so i'll get that done, any examples to copy? if not no problems thanks for your help anyway

You do not have to specify the exact routing, just enough to complete the RTW trip back to your point of origin. You can leave all segments except the first open. If you do add or delete cities along the way then you will have to have the ticket reissued at a cost of $US75 and some added hassle. If you specify the total route (open or booked, either way) at the front end, then you can just make date/time/flight changes at no charge.

As for a format, something like -

X/O [date] origin, destination airline [flight]

Where X/O indicates transit/stopover and items in brackets [] are optional, depending on whether or not you are actually booking the flight.
