QF/AY Mixed Class
I'm not quite sure where to post this! I'm hopeless with reading fare conditions, and would appreciate your help. If anyone wants the full rules as a PDF, please email!
It's the mixed class AU-EU fare: QF in Y(L), AY shorthaul in Y(L), and AY Longhaul in J(I). Fare basis is AYQFEUEAYC/MIX. Surcharge A$220 to route Atlantic-Pacific once. BNE-(MEL-ADL-PER- if possible!)SIN-HEL-LHR-stopover-HEL-JFK-LAX(on AY5731 is legal)-MEL-BNE. Notes:
Total fare before taxes AU$4,600 If I can MR through AU, then SCs are 10+10+20+20+160+20+20+100+60+40+10=470 Any holes please OW gurus? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif (Edited for poor maths) [This message has been edited by willyroo (edited 07-09-2003).] |
Thanks michaelblain for your review. It seems to mostly work, except I need to route LAX-SYD-BNE - no can do MEL. Bummer http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I was fairly close to the mark, just too many transfers. Basically:
Yes, og, another good SCs/$ equation methinks... |
Originally posted by og: So where's the review? I can only see Willyroo's postings. I am very interested in what you come up with here - it seems to be one of the best value for money J trips RTW ex Oz For example the following DONE5 routing would earn just under 2000 SCs and 63000 base miles (or over 110K miles with bonuses, depending on airline choice): syd-hkg-lhr-hel-lhr-dxb-lhr-yvr-jfk-mia-ord-anc-dfw-jfk-eze-scl-ipc-scl-eze-jfk-syd Why are the QF/AY mixed class fares interesting given the much greater earning efficiency of the OWE fares? |
Just taking a browse through some prices and it looks like the DONE5 is over $10,000 if you're paying with our Pacific Pesos (which would be $6,000ish in US$ depending on what those wacky currency traders whims are). So it does ratchet up the cost a fair bit to go the DONE5.
|
Number_6, I echo GibSpmuh's comments on cost & budgeting. I'd love to do the DONE5 and agree it is far better value for money, but I have two tickets to consider (Mrs og won't let me travel alone...) and there just arn't enough hours in a short holiday to pack in as many sectors as you quote. So it's back to the more modest fares and diplomacy of suggesting to the "boss" that we should fly from A to B via half the world in a most contorted line with many stopovers (transits) and club lounge visits. At least it's better than writing these messages or taking a bus.

DONE5 is more than twice the price of the option I'm looking at. I've been "invited" to go to London in September for a very interesting oppportunity, but I'll have to spend my own money to do it. I agree with you number_6 that the DONEs are the best for $$/SCs, but sometimes the $$ are short!
It's either BNE-SIN in Y, SIN-HEL in J, or SYD/MEL-LHR in WT+ for the same price. The Atlantic routing was simply another way home, with some nice SCs to earn. My TA just threw another one at me: CX AUS-UK A$3,999: AUS-HGK 1 leg in Y, one in J. HGK-UK 1 leg in Y, one leg in J. The killer on this itin is that one of the ultra longhauls (HGK-UK or vv) must be in Y... |

On the CX fare does anyone know what class the economy sectors are booked in? I assume the business sectors would be D or I.
|
The rules show that the economy sectors are booked in S and the business in I; must be ticketed by 30 July and travel must commence by 30 September.
|
I'd have to agree with Willyroo's assessment on the fare rules, the example given seems pretty clear. I'm sure plenty of people would be happy if that was a mistaken perception though http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
