surface ppt-akl on OWE ???
Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but I can't find it with a quick search.
Trying to put together a RTW (to actually visit places, not just a mileage run http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ) and the Global Explorer just doesn't have enough miles, BUT we really want to go to Easter Island, so... is it possible to ticket SCL-IPC-PPT (surface) AKL then pickup again. The relevant sections of the starfile would appear to be: Routing: 8N . 1. TRAVEL MUST BE VIA THE ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC 9N . OCEANS. ONLY 1 CROSSING OF EACH OCEAN IS 10N . PERMITTED. TRANSOCEANIC SURFACE IS NOT 11N . PERMITTED. 95N . 8. INTERMEDIATE SURFACE SEGMENTS PERMITTED Does the IPC-PPT flight count as my transpacific crossing (going from S America to SWP by oneworld's definition), and therefore make the PPT-AKL just an intermediate surface segment ?? I think you have a good case for what you want to do, as PPT is part of the SWP and you are just going from one island in the SWP to another. Of course, the final decision will be up to the rate folks at whatever airline you are going to use to ticket the entire trip. If you don't succeed at one airline, try another.

Yes you can do it, but I don't think it will help you as the mileage from surface sectors has to be included in your total.

Okay, do the itin is now looking like this:
cai-lhr, lhr-dfw, cun-jfk, lga-mia, mia-gye, gye-scl, scl-rio, puq-scl, scl-ipc, ipc-ppt (ppt-akl-syd on *A award) syd-cns, cns-asp, asp-drw, drw-per, per-hkg, hkg-lhr, lhr-cai. Given that these (bar hkg) are all places that we *want* to go to, I make this a 5 continent OWE, with three spare segments (since we're in Asia, may do something there) - anyone see any problems ?? Also, I see that tickets originating in Area 1 need 7 day advance purchase, but I can't see where Area 1 covers - is this going to cause me problems in Egypt ? tia Stewie |
The seven-day advance is for North America, lucky us.
If you want to avoid HKG, unless you're in a bind for SWP segments you can do SYD-JNB-LHR, although the QF segment will be two-class, they tell me. If you want to use up some Asian segments, DPS is reasonably well served by QF, plus service DPS-SIN two or three times a week. CX has fifth-freedom SIN-BKK and of course flies directly to HKG. Out of SIN you can also get to LHR on BA. And of course you can avoid HKG also by flying SYD-LHR on QF or BA, although it stops at BKK so you get charged for Asia. |

Thanks for the info about the advance purchase - good news ! It's not that we want to avoid HKG, just that there's no way of getting from SWP back to LHR without touching (and buying) either Asia or Africa (I don't think). Given that we have to do one or the other, we're just currently wondering about HKG and maybe DPS) for city and beach, or JNB/CPT for safari.... oh decisions, decisions... |

Stewie, that's true - SWP to Europe will cost you Asia or Africa, even if you take the BA/QF one-plane service through BKK. Life's not fair, and OWE rules often don't make any particular sense to those of us looking in.
If you like the idea of being more-or-less alone amongst herds of African animals and have 5 days or a bit more, I'd suggest that you spend it in Kruger and/or the adjoining private facilities. Kruger used to be obscenely cheap, and remains quite reasonable, for a relaxed do-it-yourself game-viewing experience that's impossible to beat. (Guided viewing might give a denser experience, if that's your preference.) SA doesn't seem to be following Namibia's downhill path (in terms of game parks) too rapidly, but there's some chance the place won't be worth the stop some time in the future, as seems to be the case with Etosha. |
Just browsing through the rules in planning my next trip I noticed that Australian Airlines has snuck into both the OWE and GE rules as an allowable airline which came as a bit of a surprise. Still no miles or status at this stage, but there are rumours about a QF codeshare being slapped on top of some of the flights, be interesting to see how it pans out.

I don't see anywhere that you can use AO for the OW Explorer, only the Global Explorer.

QF has applied for codeshare on quite a few AO flights - which when approived (hopefully) will help many OW itins.
Only issue is that AO is all Y... |
