Suppose CX offered (in response to SARS) a promotion that paid travel agents some fee for every paid business/first passenger booked on a CX long-haul; suppose the promotion were such that RTW fares were eligible; suppose only certain travel agencies (i.e. discounters) were eligible, as CX tried to maintain the integrity of its brand.

I'm just speculating. But I wonder if 1st-air's current sale might reflect some bonus like this...

I have been told that 8% commission is still possible, and 5% is common. It is only the US airlines that have zero commission (don't know about the European airlines, but I suspect it is in the 5% range for high-revenue tickets). I do know that for some tickets that I buy my travel agent acts as though getting close to 10%, but whether this is official or unofficial I don't know. I'm not in the travel business so my comments are not authoritative, they are just observations from a customer. CX and QF do pay nice commissions (at least outside of the US).

Outside of the business as well, but anxious to know the structure lest my hard-working TA get shortchanged, I think:

AA pays not a dime. Shame on them.
BA pays USD10 for an OWE booking
CX pays CAD150 (to Canadian TA's) for an OWE
QF pays tbd but it's apparently not paltry

There's a big difference between 5% and USD10 or even CAD150 (on a CAD7000+ ticket). Funny how hard it is to get information on this subject! (Though I'm sure airlines prefer it this way, and probably so do travel agents.)

Among others, the MYR, THB and HKD remain pegged to the USD at MYR 3.8, THB 42 (this one floats a bit) and HKD 7.8 respectively.

OWEs departing ex-HKG apparently earn 7% commission for TAs whether they be issued on CX, QF or BA stock.

I have't checked the real prices, but it "feels" as if, given that there's a cost in getting there, it's almost not worth the trouble for a 4-continent A. (Biting tongue to avoid getting into politics...)

[If I did the lookup/math correctly, the difference between CA and US fares at CAD1.40=US$1.00, assuming you pay by c/c and suffer a 1% forex fee, for AONE3...6 are:
US$537, $732, $405, $463.]

Don't know about you...but I managed to save a client over US$1000 for originating in Canada than the US for a MONE4 equiv.
