Help! Oneworld novices.
I am in the initial stages of planning my itinerary (6 continent - origin Auckland NZ) and am not completely clear on the sector rule.
For example, I want to go to Bangkok, Mumbai, Manila, Sri Lanka in Asia. It looks like Cathay fly to all but I may have to transfer in Hongkong to get between say, Manila and Sri Lanka or Mumbai and Manila. I need to know whether this transfer (in Hongkong) counts as 2 sectors or 1??? I have the same issues in Africa - as it looks like to get from Windhoek, Namibia to Lusaka, Zambia I have to fly via Johannesburg - is this 1 or 2 sectors. Any advice appreciated! |
Anytime you have a different ticket coupon, that is a segment. Thus, your HKG transfer between MNL and CMB or BOM will involve two different flight numbers and two different ticket coupons resulting in two segments being used. Your OWE segments are limited to four in Asia and four in Africa, however, you can purchase two more in each continent.

Thanks for the info - I thought as much.
One more question, do the intercontinental flights count as sectors. Example, Auckland-BKK, BKK-MUMBAI, MUMBAI-HKG, HKG-MNL, MNL-HGK, HKG-Johannesburg. Is this 4, 5 or 6 sectors in Asia?? |
That's 4 sectors within Asia, assuming you can ticket AKL-BKK as a single segment. remember that you can buy extra segments if you wish. And that the HKG-CMB flights go through BKK also, so you could do:
AKL-BKK-BOM-BKK-CMB-HKG-MNL-HKG-JNB by buying the two extra segments. Alternatively, you could buy a one-way ticket separately (on Air Lanka I guess) for BOM-CMB which might well be cheaper than buying the two extra segments on the OWE. |
Intercontinental flights do not count against your continental segment's limits.

So yes AKL-SYD-BKK is allowed but it uses one of the SWP segments. |
