Thanks for posting ScottC. I'm a little confused about the distinction between Global Explorer and OW Explorer. Is the former a BA only product? Also, am I correct in understanding that there is no mileage ceiling on the OW Explorer?

christep Dec 1, 2002 4:32 am

Thanks Scott.

They are both OneWorld products. The main distinction being that he Global Explorer is based on miles limits and the OneWorld Explorer is based on sectors. There are also some other specific differences which you can see by comparing them side-by-side - one major one is that the Global Explorer includes Qantas affiliates that allows you to get around the Pacific Islands much better than the OWE.

There is no specific limit on miles on the OWE - there ahve been many discussions here in the past as to how to get maximum miles from it. Over 100,000 is possible with a six continents version.

ScottC, Thanks for the latest version.

oneworld.com has a simplied intro here
http://www.oneworld.com/products/explorer.cfm

for those who want to have some of the fare rules in layman language
(but it is an oversimplified intro)

On page 6 of the OWE rules it states that one cannot upgrade from economy to business/first by sector.

I just travelled 3 continents on an economy OWE and upgraded 7 of my 8 AA sectors with a VIPOW and electronic upgrades.

What gives?

Normally, when a fare rules says non-upgradable, it means you cannot pay to upgrade or to change to a different fare basis in order to circumvent some restrictions. SOme fares let you do this, others do not.

Upgrading using FFP points/credits/stickers/whatever is a different matter entirely.

I was just looking at the oneworld circle trip explorer rules, and just thought of something pretty interesting.. there are no mileage or sector restrictions.. only restrictions I see is that you can't fly the same city pair more than once...

so basically, does it mean that if I have no stopovers on a circle ticket, I can fly Africa-Europe-Asia-Africa, and fly every single destination within Asia offered by CX, and every destination within Europe offered by BA?

christep Dec 8, 2002 8:02 am

Er, wow, yes! I have just spent 20 mins looking at the CX version of the rules, and you seem to be right. As far as I can see you could do:

CDG-LHR
LHR to every destination in Europe that BA flies to, and back
LHR-HKG
HKG-every destination in Asia that CX flies to, and back
HKG-SYD
SYD to every destiantion in Australia/NZ that QF flies to, and back. And then some other stuff jumping around Aus.
PER-JNB
then various BA affiliate routes round Africa
Then back to LHR

The only limit is 6 stopovers in total and no more than two per continent.

So if you want to live on a plane for 6 weeks or so I guess you could run up 100,000+ base miles. (Probably lots more - I'm struggling to get my head round this)

The mother of all mileage runs!

Has anyone got any of this backed up by facts and some fares to see if this is a competitive way to earn miles? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
