What would you do?

I would like to travel to Australlia sometime between this Dec-Feb. I plan on redeeming miles and hope to travel in the front cabin. The question is do I take Cathay or Quantas and if Quantas can I stop in Hawaii on the way?

Thanks,
Moe

Going via Hawaii significantly increases your chance to get a seat and reduces the cost. Catch is that the QF flights out of Hawaii do not have an F cabin. However if you want to see Hawaii it is a great way to go, and the flight HNL-Australia is much more pleasant than LAX-SYD due to the shorter duration. Anyone with an interest in visiting Hawaii would be foolish not to route this way.

I think the hawaii stopover adds 20,000 miles to the cost of the qantas award when using aadvantage.

Nope, 10K miles more than business class from the mainland (and 20K less than F). Pretty good deal given the usual (high) cost of US-Hawaii awards. See http://www.aa.com/apps/AAdvantage/Vi...0001&itemDescr iptor=AAdvantagePartnersContent

SInce CX doesn't fly NAmerica to HNL, travel on that carrier alone is not possible. You'd have to get a oneworld multi-carrier award and CX will have to start flying HNL-HKG. In that case, you could take AA to HNL, do a stopover, then continue on to HKG and onward to SYD or wherever in Australia CX still flies. But since CX is not flying to/from HNL, none of this really matters.

Travel on CX would route you through HKG, where you can get a free stopover if you are so inclined. It looks like one the most attractive awards to me.
