RTW misadventures and missteps

Thanks to a lovely flareup here at the office it now looks like there's no way in hell I'm going to be able to do the first leg of my RTW. Of course, as the fares have skyrocketed out of JNB this means a hefty increase in ticket price no matter what. My only saving grace is that the business is willing to pay for the added cost of the ticket, but since at this point it's not exactly a bargain to be ex-JNB is there an alternative routing that might be more advantageous? I'm inclined to just shift the dates around and keep things as they are as I've found a great fare to and from JNB on BA in F and also the scheduling to/from JNB works out well for me. But, I'm still very new at this so any suggestions are MOST welcome.

That's unfortunate. Gibraltar might be a good choice -- it's reasonably easy to get there inexpensively.

Also, what *is* a good F fare on BA to JNB? Maybe I'm interested in a reroute.

Roundtrip was $4,000 from BRU in full F. Ex-LHR that same flight prices at ~$6700 so I considered it a good deal. I could've gotten down there with miles but for me, the ability to earn miles on the way down there is DEFINITELY worth the extra cash.

if you havent been able to issue the ex-JNB before feb1, it perhaps makes more sense to go to gibraltar or australia to start the trip instead. or even most of anywhere in europe (BRU, e.g.). look at fewmiles' site for fares sorted in USD. you can still include JNB as one of your stops to miminally disrupt your originial routing.
(i.e. i suppose the USA-JNB ticket is refundable)

to be more specific, your new RTW will be. BRU-JNB...........BRU. it must be cheaper than $4000+$8000. i think it is something around 6000-7000$ for an ex-BRU RTW in F

I just confirmed with AA a 5 continent, first class RTW ex-AKL is just under US$6,000. Nice country to start in and inexpensive to see on local carriers if you are interested.

Ugh... I feel your pain. Same issue here forced me to decide that despite the great fare, a RTW ex-JNB wasn't going to be happening for this girl either!

I'm glad to hear there are still steals and deals... perhaps I'll start one in the fall.

me as well, but i ended up still issuing the ticket near end of the year anyway, just in case i win a lottery and don't have to work by then http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
