connecting at sfo

As part of my OWE I will be flying LHR - SFO on BA connecting to an SFO - JFK AA flight. I want to avoid catching the red eye AA flight but that leaves me slightly less than two hours connection time. I've heard that passengers arriving on international flights and connecting onto domestic flights have to claim their baggage and recheck it.
Is that the case and if it is...is less than two hours enough connection time??

I guess if I miss the connection I can always take the redeye...but somehow that doesn't seem very appealing to me...

The new SFO international airport is very nice. It's modern and the immigration/customs facilities are fast and efficient.

If you're arriving that late in the day, the queues should be quite fast. You still have to collect your bags and go through customs. But after customs, there is another 'quick' check-in counter where you put your bags there for your flight and get your boarding pass for the AA flight as well.

From the International Terminal, you'd need to take a transfer bus to the AA terminal. But once there, you'd have to go through security again. But bear in mind that if it is a late flight, the terminal might be quite empty and you might passs through quickly.

Thanks Guy Betsy

I don't know about it being THAT late in the day though..the ba gets into sfo at 1:50 and the aa departs at 3:45.

I couldn't find any information about minimum connecting times on the sfo website but in the cx timetable it says that minimum connecting times for internation - domestic flights at sfo is 1:45. So I would presume that it is a valid connection and that if I miss the connection then they would put me on the next available flight even if there is no availability in my particular booking class??
If I do happen to miss the connection then do I have to take the next aa flight, which leaves more than 6 hours later or will they book me on an earlier flight on another airline??

Thanks
