LHR/HKG in First CX or BA

Hi Folks

I will be doing a RTW in just over a month & have decided to do it "up front". Last year I did it in J and must confess that I did not think much of the J product in the CX 747s.

But I have not flown the front cabin in either of these airlines, does anyone have any suggestions?

Good Luck
James

Take CX!! (make sure it is on a 747).

CX has 12 pax in the FC cabin while BA has 14.

Personally, I don't like BA's slanted seats.

If you do fly CX, try to get 4A/4K (normally blocked by CX) if you can as they have lots of storage space beside the seat (sort of like a table beside the seat that is built into the wall).

Well, I will be contrary and vote for BA. The revamped First product has a few benefits that CX's product does not have. Inseat power, plus BA will supply the appropriate adaptor for your laptop. Also, a much better selection of inflight entertainment. While BA has 2 extra seats I find the cabin to more peaceful than CX's.

IMHO the 2 seats is about space, not really about peacefulness.
CX has 4 rows, while BA has 5, on the same space in the front end of 747-400.
for CX, it is 1-1 x 2; 1-2-1 x 2
for BA, it is 1-1 x 3; 1-2-1 x 2

BA lent me Tagus adapter for my laptop (i didnt know it is an official benefit though, though they just have 1 or 2 to hand out)

as for entertainment, i am all for CX (but i am baised, i guess british would prefer BA), so it is subjective.
while most film titles are similar, CX have "friends"! (regular channel, not the F collection)

For some perhaps a compelling enough reason to fly BA. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Both are great. I like BA for its privacy and feeling like you are the only person in the cabin. CX has a more open space feeling.

Overall, I would choose BA but barely over CX.

Since it's a RTW, why not fly CX outbound to Asia and BA inbound from the Americas?

If you fly BA one way and CX the other, be sure to use CX from HKG as their lounge is incredible. I don't know if BA pax can use the CX lounge or if they have to use the BA lounge.

Frankly speaking, I like them both!
CX's Asian hospitality and their selection of fine vintage wine and champagne as well as personally prepared meals are hard to beat. But then, I think BA does an exceptional job of taking care of their premium passengers on board and on the ground. CX's ground service has more to be desired.

As for seats, I did not find BA's configuration disturbing cramped. For CX, I prefer 2A or 2K or whereever no one else is seated nearby! I would personally avoid the last rows of any First as there are more traffic and noise and I fly First class to sleep.( after fine meal and wine, of course )

As a general rule, if you're travelling on BA First you will be allowed access to CX's First lounge. But at HKG it might be quite inconvienient because CX Lounge is located right after immigrations but the gates tend to be a mile away (quite literally).

Besides, I heard that the joint BA/QF lounge at HKG is excellent also. Maybe try both?

QF/BA lounge in HKG is beautiful ! One of the best there are.

The BA and CX lounges in HKG are only a short walk away from each other. More than 5 minutes, but less than 15 minutes to walk.

The BA/QF lounge in HKG is nothing to sneeze at. It's quite nice. But it really doesn't hold a candle to the Wing. This makes a lot of sense, given that HKG is CX's home airport, while BA/QF are not based in HKG...

Haven't flown BA in F but Business is better than CX. Watch for an announcement of CX's new J product coming out in October.

CX seat 1A is great as you feel like you are the only person on the plane. CX service is excellent and seat extends comfortably for a 6 foot passenger. Slippers and sleep wear are very comfortable.

While on a BA 747, did take a peek at F but was not as impressed as CX. Definetly use the Wing when in Hong Kong.

CX have announced their new J class. Lot's of discussion in the CX forum on this. Downside is that it will take about 2.5 years to roll out completely.
