Using AA Miles to upgrade on OW RTW
Looking at Westbound RTW in J, but would like to use AA miles to upgrade to F wherever possible. As AA has little or no metal over the pacific and none from Oz to LHR, what are my options (if any!) to upgrade ? Can one use AA miles to upgrade to F on CX, and if so please give details....
Thx guys ! |
need 40 mile to upgrade RT on CX to hkg though Oz/Jnb/Dxb, but not lhr.
i guess u can use this to upg RTW in D. but u will use 40k to just upg one-way |
CX normally allows Asian upgrades upto Istambul which is virtually Europe. You might want to check out this opportunity and get a separate segment from Istambul to LHR.
In any case, CX is the one and only AA partner that allows furthest west-bound upgrades at all. AA only goes to Taipei and that's on a flight from the States without a stopover in the South Pacific. |
Please note that you cannot use AA miles to upgrade on CX to anywhere else other than TO/FROM North America via HKG. So from Australia, you can't upgrade to London unless your routing is Australia-HK-USA-London. That way, too you'd need 2 awards. One way to USA and another to upgrade from US to London.

Chiangi - at first I didn't understand your point, AA awards are the same regardless of starting point. But if you are talking about the CX awards offered by AA, well they are structured by CX. I'd like to see more consistency in award structures across AA's partners, and definitely equalization in terms of mileage required for an award (some are just not worth it). Agree with you on the JL awards, excellent value for money, like NRT-SYD or vice versa 60K in business, QF's is 90K which is a rip given that their business product on the Japan routes is appalling.
