I'm lost
 

I am planning a RTW trip for june, make some miles and see the world, I havn't done any planning yet but want to try and visit as many cities as I can without using hotel stays etc (I want to use the difference in price to do first class). I have read most of the posts but can't find answers to a few questions:

What is the 10 day rule? Does this mean I have to to the RTW in a minimum of 10 days? I plan on starting in AMS or LHR, can I end my trip in LHR and buy a seperate ticket LHR-AMS making the final segment (on the RTW) at a later stage?

What tools can you use? Will the online timetable at BA be of any help?

Are there sites with examples or should I just use the examples here on the board as a starter?

Am I forgetting anything? Has anyone experience in a fly-only trip like this? (besides almost killing yourself doing it?)

Does BA have a RTW dedicated desk or am I stuck with a travel agent?

I will answer one of your questions, and I'm sure others will tackle the rest.

A good tool to use is a downloadable flight planner available at the Cathay Pacific website (www.cathaypacific.com). It is basically a subset of the OAG that you can configure to show only oneworld carrier flights worldwide). The only warning is that you need to pay careful attention to codeshare flights that are displayed by the flight planner, since only codeshares operated by other oneworld carriers are eligible.

I second HKG_Flyer1's suggestion of using CX's oneworld timetable. It's quite useful.

I maintain a website called the Unofficial oneworld Info Desk with info on lots of 1W stuff including the Explorer RTW fare. I've got some prices and fare rules available. (Disclaimer: I've never done an RTW before, so questions should be directed here, as you are doing.)

As for examples, the itineraries people post here are as any you'll find. What are your goals on this trip? Do you want to make a certain elite tier (e.g. AA EXP) all in one shot? Which continents do you want to visit? What cities?

Happy flying... If you're going FC, then you can sleep during the flights. Question is, will you have enough time to see the sights in the cities you plan to visit? I'm not sure you can avoid hotels completely.

Not sure about BA, but I know AA has a dedicated RTW desk.

If you are flying in F class on BA or CX, not only will you not be "killing" yourself, you actually won't want to get off the plane.

Where else can you loaf in your pj's drinking unlimited amounts of expensive booze, eat all the food you want ("sir, are you sure you don't want another serving of caviar"), catch up on movies, be waited on hand and foot by a lot of pretty fine ladies and gentlemen and basically just lay around like a slug with no distractions??

Emmm.... how about at home in my own bed?

You obviously have a much larger household staff than I (actually my staff totals zero, unless I can include animals).

Thanks for the tips folks, I never knew about the CX planner, this is a great help!

Time now to jump into all the rules and regulations and come up with a foolproof plan to make as many miles as possbile and to see as much as can be done...

As for HKG_Flyer1, My staff is also pretty small and much less helpful than the usual flight crew, may I suggest a few helpful tips:

big reclining chair
fridge next to chair full of snacks
widescreen tv
good view (window seat)
