It's ALL OVER.....

It's official, CP will be out of Oneworld and joining Star Alliance, just don't know when. CP will continue codesharing with AA.

Sad, Sad.....

I guess AA is the big winner in this whole thing.

Well, I think CX and BA will going to have a tough time fighting with AC-CP in the nearest future on the Canada-HK/UK market, for sure.

Celestar340 Dec 8, 1999 5:40 pm

CX's service rules over AC's anytime!

Agincourt Dec 8, 1999 11:38 pm

Haha Celestar340, you gotta be kidding, everyone knows CX's better than AC, anytime! Even CP's better than AC, anytime, everytime! (Hopefully CP can maintains their service level under AC's rules. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif)

Ah, Agincourt, I fear that that is not to be. I predit the following within a month of AC moving into CP's office:

- cancelation on Chef's Conclave
- addition of several rows of CP Intl J class
- cancelation of new uniforms
- Upgrades for GLD and CLB, who knows perhaps even Exec Plat from highest Y fares only
- NO ULTIMATE UPGRADES. PERIOD.
- And I think that we all know that free booze in MLLs and Empress Lounges is about to go, at least for domestic lounges http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
- I honestly would not be shocked if AC and CP no longer award points/miles for discounted fares in Canada.

My are we cynical this afternoon/evening! But you are for the most part right about the decline we will be soon facing in elite level benefits. Particularly in light of AC's just announced exclusion for Elites of upgrades from discount fares. What will Gold have to hold for us in the new regime?

I am presently in a sombre Empress Club in Edmoton awaiting my (upgraded from M-class) flight to YYZ for a long weekend. Best to start using all those upgrade stickers now, and start putting points into the AAdvantage Gold/Platinum Challenge so we have some status at oneworld later in the new year when the changes come down.

I will still fly Cdn to very very end when the last goose is painted over with the maple leaf. Not quite sure what to say to all the staff out here who I've known for almost 20 years from CPAir on up. They've got jobs and know Buzz will fight hard for them, and I guess in the end that's what's more important to me than upgrades from cheap fares. These are people who have put their lives into their work, and I hope AC will treat them less shabily than they are now treating their Elite members, and plan to treat the rest of us after things are rationalized.

Guess I will tender my shares before Christmas and we'll see what our respective elite level renewal packs offer us in 2000.

As the Brits say: put on a stiff upper lip and carry on...flying the great Canadian goose!

Agincourt Dec 11, 1999 1:06 am

Well, too bad how people didn't fly with Canadian often to see CP's spirit. I guess it's too late now as AC, the 'evil' as I think of it, and CP will soon go under one wing. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Not quite yet.... The Globe and Mail is reporting that AC will walk away from the deal unless the government let it have a uncontrolled (No price ceiling...) monopoly in the domestic market which will be impossible. So...it ain't over yet!

Empress

But let's say if AC walks away, CP will still in deep financial trouble. Then who is going to save the airline? AA? they tend to betray CP.

Andrew Yiu Dec 11, 1999 5:24 pm

Remember, AA struck the deal with AC because they still want to be part of CP's Asia routes which shows that they couldn't afford to lose them. They had this plan all along I believe. If it all works out, they save a couple hundred millions and they'll still be part of CP. If all else fail, it'll be "OneWorld" to the rescue!

Well, Darth Milton is making enemies fast and furiously in the media, government, and competition bureau, not to mention the public and surprisingly, AC FFers. It sounds like the political flack the bureaucrats have been taking is starting to have some effect. I don't think Colinette can hide under his desk much longer.

If AC walks away, we're kinda' back to square one, with the government cornered into assisting CP. And I think there might be some support for assisting CP from AC elites, strangely enough.

AA made overtures about putting more $$$ into CP previously, but was hamstrung by the foreign ownership rules. I suppose they could have "loaned" the money to CP, but the Royal Bank was already doing that. I don't know if they could have done more. They already deferred the SABRE fees. While I'm not a big fan of AA, they seem to have been the only ones to assist CP over the past several years, even if it was for their own interests.

I have sent my e-mail along to CPlus in Vancouver. So far I have just been given the computer generated "your request has been recieved" response.

I feel I gave a reasonable case, and given that the AC may (hope!!!!!) fall apart, CPlus agents may take highly to my situation. If Gold comes through, I will not step foot an an AC/AC Connection/Star Aircraft for all of 2000!!!!!! I am still really, really mad over what they did to me.

I have 1 flight in January booked from Toronto to Kingston back to school on Jan 10th on Air Ontario (AKA Air Canada). This flight will be cancelled and rebooked on Canadian should I get Gold.

Last thursday night, after reading FlyAway's post on the Elite upgrade changes, you should have seen how angry I was!!!! I was swearing to people over the phone about it! All my friends now think I'm nuts! I have been going on and on about how upset I am, but they all have very little sympathy for me, as they never fly business class, and never use lounges. I still feel I'm in the right.

Celestar340 Dec 12, 1999 11:01 am

Airfares within Canada are already high. Can anyone imagine what it would mean if there is no limit and with no choice to fly....

Toronto to Montreal....$500 oneway. Take it or leave it.

All Exec Platinums and Emeralds unite....write in to your respective airlines and ask to rescue CP.

Would that help?

According to a Newsworld report this evening, it is all over. Ottawa and AC have agreed to terms for the take-over of Cdn, and Thursday is the deadline for tendering the balance of outstanding shares by Cdn shareholders. This I've now done with my broker, but AC only took up 40% of my AC shares last month at $16, so I guess I still own a bit of both airlines. But I'll keep flying the big goose until she sheds her last feather, route by route.

hillrider Dec 22, 1999 9:30 am

Yep, Reuters reports as follows:

The deal will also start a phasing out of the participation by Canadian Airlines in the Oneworld international air alliance, whose key partners include British Airways and AMR Corp.'s American Airlines. The new Air Canada will remain in the rival Star Alliance codesharing network, whose partners include Germany's Lufthansa and United Airlines.
