Traveling on BA then AA
 

All,

First off thank you in advance for your response. My Fiance and I are traveling to Europe for our Honeymoon on a cruise. We are booked on the way over for Business class into London (LHR) then have a car service taking us to our hotel the day before the cruise.

On the way home we have a couple of Days that we would like to spend in London. The best/cheapest award flight home is leaving out of Manchester, UK (MAN). We need to get to the MAN airport the day of the flight for our trip home. The flight is on American Airlines direct back to ORD.

I ended up finding extremely cheap flights from LHR to MAN in the morning getting us there with several (4) hours to spare. The flight is on British Airways. If we decided to take this flight to MAN would we be able to have BA transfer bags between our flights or would we have to re-check with American. Also since we are Business Class on the second leg of the trip would we get additional baggage allowance as BA is a one world partner.

I do not mind having to recheck but the process would be easier without it. Also I am a one world Saphire, AA Platinum member does that get me any additional baggage allowance on BA. This looks like it is going to be the easiest option to get to the MAN airport with the least amount of hassle.

BA will not check bags through to AA if you are traveling on separate PNR's.

Check this thread in the AA forum for particulars:

If separate PNRs then no extra allowance on BA due to the AA flight being in business.

Platinum status would ordinarily get you some extra kg allowance, but not on BA "hand baggage only" fares - if this is what your "extremely cheap" fare is.

Have you looked at a train London to Manchester?
It will take some time & money to get to LHR.
Going the night before would be a lot safer.

As above, if is a cheap fare, it may not have checked baggage included. That will cost you big $$$ at the airport to add. Look at the details.

AA Platinum will get you extra allowance but you must make sure that you are buying a luggage inclusive fare. Buy on ba.com to see what you're actually buying (sites like Expedia will sell you the cheapest ticket which maybe hand baggage only). BA may or may not check your bags through to the final destination, but the official policy is that it won't so you need to plan accordingly.

Manchester is a very small airport and it will take you 2-3 minutes to get from baggage reclaim then go upstairs and check in again.

Ir you are at Heathrow flying is a good idea. As others have said make sure you get a fare with baggage and maybe go up the night before. You can get reasonable rates for the on airport Hilton hotel.

If you are in central London you can go by train. It will take around 3 hours to get to Heathrow with one change at Manchester Piccadilly.
