In my case this would be CX. (I want to start ex HND.)

Has anyone else had this experience? Or did I just get an inexperienced agent...

I may try againg in a few hours and see if I get a different response...
Sadly, the AA RTW desk was recently merged with AA Meeting Services, so it's best to ask for a long-time RTW agent by name, as otherwise one might be speaking with a Meeting Services agent. Those agents have a dreadful reputation even just for the simple stuff such as assigning seats.

Update

Just got off the phone with a very helpful agent. All booked.

I guess the moral of the story is if at first you don't succeed, try try again...

They're the agents who handled certain contracted travel and certain group travel. People I know who had to deal with them (because of their corporate contract) report that they are pretty much the worst of the worst.

Even when it was just the RTW desk, they made up rules like this from time to time. I recall a rule for a while that the first overwater segment had to be on AA metal for them to book it.

Any recent experiences with making chnages after the 1st flown flight? A couple of routes with 1st class are no more in the middle of my itinerary. Wonder what the effect of the CX New Year's day fare mistake will have on inventory ex-USA.

No need to wonder. Premium cabin award tickets both ex-HKG and ex-U.S. will be harder to come by for the next year, or so.

From what I can see, F and J inventory is dramatically reduced. I have a CX flight booked in J. From the time it was booked many months ago until the mistake fare, the flight was F6. When the mistake fare his the blogs, it went to F0, and EF shows five of the six seats allocated.

Should have indicated after mid-Dec 2019 to Jan 2020. Only 355 days in advance, so Jan should be OK. I did check EF and noticed that A inventory is reduced ex-JFK but not F. ex-LAX/ORD seems the normal A2 or A3 except for a few random days. May have to use JL trans-pac if I can't get what I want.

That question is impossible to answer as asked.

1. Define "best."
2. Are you in a frequent flyer program? Which carrier?
3. Which cabin?
4. How many continents?

I assume the question is more "what is the cheapest city to originate a DONEX", hoping that the answer is the same for 3/4/5/6.
