thanks everyone, this has been really helpful. mostly likely going to book:
YYZ-xHKG-DPS-xHKG-CAN-xHKG-AKL-xSYD-MEL-xDOH-NYC then 10 month break to use remaining NA segments before -YYZ.

Look reasonable? What would happen if I failed to take the final YYZ flight, is the advice the typical 'don't do it too often and you should be fine'?

IIRC you can end anywhere in the US or Canada without violating any rules if the ticket is issued in Canada/US.

If you "missed" your last flight the Oneworld Police wouldn't come looking for you. ;)

all, thanks again for your help on this. managed to get everything booked online in the end.

after re-thinking a couple of things (and seeing the cost benefit $7.5k vs $8.8k in Toronto) I decided to start my DONE4 originating in Oslo, especially given miles tickets were available JFK-OSL.

OSL-LHR-xHKG-DPS-xHKG-CAN-xHKG-AUK-xHKG-JFK-CLT-JFK-xLHR-LBA-xLHR-OSL

Thanks again, Jason

Good you got it sorted. Having 1 stop in SWP adds a lot:- *ONE3 to *ONE4.
HKG-AUK will be interesting. HKG-AKL no so much :)

Pricing as a multi-city on OW airlines is showing $17k, pricing a DONE4 is showing about $11k. I have two questions:

1) is it possible to do a DONE3 visiting these locations, in the order above? the OW Explorer engine won't let me fly 'back' from Auckland via e.g. Delhi, saying this constitutes 2 Pacific crossings, even though Delhi-> NYC will travel over Europe

2) given how much time I have on my hands, is there a way to significantly save money, by potentially amending/adding to my routing?

Assuming you want to visit the places mentioned and not India, you could do this as a Circle Pacific, since you are crossing the Pacific via Asia in one direction and via the South Pacific in the other. If you'd rather do a DONEx, you'd have more options on routings, no mileage cap, and could visit more places.

If you have a nice bank of miles to use for awards, you might consider starting the DONEx in South Africa and using miles to get to and from there.
