Cancelling partially used RTW ticket?

Hi All-

According to the Oneworld Explorer Fare Rules Document, it says

"For partially used transportation the refund if any will be the difference between the fare paid and the
fare for the transportation used less the fee specified in (1) above." Which for F/J tickets is 5% of total cost.

How does this work in theory, and how is the cost of each segment calculated?

If I book a 16 segment itinerary, and only fly the first 3 segments, could one potentially get a very cheap J class fare?

Sure, potentially. Anything's possible. IMO figure this out in advance, especially if you may only use three segments. Getting a partial refund like this is going to be complicated; and I would wager that you won't be happy with the calculations and outcome.

As you will be assessed the point to point cost of the segments used (one way J class tickets), I doubt that you would be entitled to much, if any, refund. Here is one example with how the rule was applied:
