Advance Seat Assignment If Ruby

I have a LHR-MAD leg on BA in October that on-line does not allow me to select seats without paying. Should I be able to do this without being charged?

Ruby gets advanced seat selection only from 7 days before the flight. IME that's sufficient because few people pay the outrageous fees anyways.
