Suggestions on 16 sector RTW ex JNB

Trying to book my first RTW, most likely ex JNB since I heard its cheaper.

I originally come up with this 45,216 miles:
jnb-lon-jfk-ord-mia-las-dfw-yvr-dfw-gru-lax-hkg-pek-doh-jnb

jnb-lon-jfk
jfk-ord
ord-mia
mia-las
las-dfw-yvr
yvr-dfw-gru
gru-lax-hkg
hkg-pek-doh-jnb

Any suggestions on how to get more miles?

For the last leg if I take a more direct route the miles drops to around 42k

I know there are previous posts where you guys could come up with 70-80k miles(not that I am asking for suggestions to make my trip 70k), but when i test them out it doesn't work.

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Welcome to FT jkuok

You ask about maximising miles
Assuming your intent is to earn lots of miles in a frequent flyer program
- which program
- which cabin class will you be flying (Economy, Business or First)
I ask because, especially in economy, some airlines will earn very poor miles in some programmes (for example economy on Cathay Pacific earns zero in the American Airlines programme)

Some suggestions:
- JNB-xLHR-LAS is further than JNB-xLHR-JFK
- start from CPT, is more miles than from JNB
- look at CPT-xDOH-DFW or elsewhere in Nth America

- you are only using 14 of the allowed 16 segments
- you are using the allowed 6 in Nth America
- so maybe add a couple more flights in Asia (HKG-MLE-HKG perhaps?)

- you have not made use of the allowed trans-con flight in Nth America - so perhaps JFK-LAX-LAS instead of JFK-ORD-LAS
- depending on time of year DFW-ANC-DFW gets plenty of miles (flights are only during the northern summer, but PHX-ANC-PHX is year-round)

- substituting EZE or SCL for GRU will give more miles

For the last leg if I take a more direct route the miles drops to around 42k
Yes, but flying HKG-JNB (instead of HKG-PEK-DOH-JNB) will give you another two segments to use elsewhere
If you do not make the second visit to Europe/Middle East then you could add LHR-MCT-LHR for example

Enjoy playing with the possibilities

EDIT:
My mistake, see post #4,#5.

I don't think ...lax-jfk... will be allowed
This is the second visit to Nth America, and so it must be a "transit without stopover"
And I'm pretty sure that two Nth American ports will be disallowed

cpt-lhr-lax-dfw-anc-dfw-jfk-gru-jfk-nrt-cmb-sin-doh-jnb

cpt-lhr-lax
lax-dfw-anc
anc-dfw-jfk
jfk-gru
gru-jfk-nrt
nrt-cmb
cmb-sin
sin-doh-jnb

Unfortunately, ex-JNB XONEX fare just have been increased, IMHO.

Expert Flyer fare search shows

LONE4/5/6 24122/28500/33516 ZAR
DONE4/5/6 67192/77383/91770 ZAR
AONEWC3 95714 ZAR

My last ex-JNB DONE4 is 59010ZAR base fare in March2015.

Now, AONEWC3 is same price as ex-JPN.

It might not be cheaper given the recent price increase

Assuming Business Class
ex-Sth Africa DONE4 base fare is now ZAR67192 (USD5540)
ex Egypt the DONE4 base fare is EGP44000 (USD5786)

So when the positioning costs are factored in, the ex-Egypt fares might be better - especially if you don't actually want to visit Sth Africa!

Last edited by pandaperth; Apr 23, 2015 at 10:59 am Reason: Changed DGLOB34 to DONE4 - OP is considering a OneWorld Explorer not a Global Explorer - prices are the same

Thanks for posting EF fare for xONEx.

First quarter 2015, DONE5 base fare was 77,424ZAR.
For those who pay with US$, note the advantage of the strength of the US$ now.

BTW, can someone post fares, ex-NRT? or ex-ICN? TIA.

same here, I am sure there are better RTW that offer more miles.

I don't mind if its totally different from my trip, but couldn't find any that is higher than 50k miles

JNB-HKG-NRT-CMB-NRT-HKG-JFK-YVR-DFW-ANC-DFW-SJU-DFW-DOH-MAD-DOH-CPT comes in at almost 61K miles, and is 4 continents rather than 5.

Are you looking at AA miles and if so are you planning on business or economy? AA earning rates for L-bucket flights are so-so on some partners, zilch on CX.

Thanks Gardyloo,

Can you explain to me this part "JNB-HKG-NRT-CMB-NRT-HKG-JFK"

I assume its jnb-hkg-nrt, nrt-cmb, cmb-hkg-jfk?

also "SJU-DFW-DOH-MAD-DOH-CPT" is sju-dfw-doh-mad, mad-doh-cpt?

Actually i am thinking if i can split my RTW in to 2 different FFP, CX and AA?
