How often will you be flying to South America or is this award trip the only one planned? Honestly I'm not sure I see the point of you getting status if this is the only one. Unless you have top tier status you won't get any international upgrade certificates (which you can't use for an award flight anyway) and you can just buy Economy Plus or Main Cabin Extra seats on your award ticket for way less than flying a few trips for status.

Plus if your award ticket is in First Class you'll have the same benefits as if you had top tier status for the duration of the flight.

Now if you are planning on making this trip a lot or have long term plans that involve a lot of travel that's a whole different story.

Note you have to pay for the AA challenge the only free challenge for AA AFAIK is DL Diamond or UA 1k to EXP

well AA challenge is out of question since its only issued temp and i thought it was going to be like *G where you could keep it. Now with respect to flying i will never fly for business so its always for pleasure hence vacation.

However because il be going to SA for vacation im not going to return quickly as i wont have any obligations back home, hence maybe 1-2ce a year (which is usually going to equate to a couple months abroad a year though).

Lastly i kind of agree with you, at first my intention was doing only economy award but realizing i didnt want my first ever flying experience to be lame, i found a available first class, but theres none available on return.

i think my goal would be to get *G with A3 and try to get a status match whenever i pay my fare with cash, which will be rare occasion but some really good deals justify $ and not a low redemption value on points. it will also give me comfort and luxury of choosing *A airlines given that A3 will give me *G eventually.. or maybe even use avios/aeroplan pts i have in some way to get me near florida on a *Airline like united with *G, then use AA to get into south america (as only AA has good redemption and award availability dates for South America). In essence enjoy gold benefits from YYZ-MIA on both ways of the trip paid with cash/aeroplan/avios and regular economy from MIA-South America destinations like BOG

I think the OP has an extremely low understanding of how FFPs work in general. A3 is an exception to the rule and by no means the norm.

Also, status matches/challenges are usually a one-time-deal, so redoing them is normally not an option. (Although, I must admit, I'm not 100% sure how the AA ones work - never looked at them)

And not just FFP by flying in general IMHO. Getting airline miles by frequent spending is a long way from being a frequent flyer. The "frequent flyer" bit seems not understood by some inexperienced newbies.

This thread has little to do with the Oneworld alliance and a lot to do with individual airline FFPs and their rules. Accordingly I'm going to close it, and recommend that further discussions be directed to the relevant airline-specific boards.
