Sydney to Milan via Tokyo - help needed
 

Hi everyone!
I am looking into flying from Sydney to Milan (MXP) via Tokyo. I am a QF frequent flyer and I would like to get the tickets from Sydney to Tokyo and from Tokyo to Sydney with my points and pay for the Tokyo to Milan (via xyz) and back journey. Ideally I would want to stop in Tokyo for 7 days on the way to Europe and for another 3 days on the way back.
Also, I would prefer not to fly QF between Tokyo and Milan as I am trying to keep my flying time to a minimum (I will be travelling with kids). I have seen that both JAL and Finnair fly from Tokyo to Milan via Helsinki, which would be a good option.
My question is... how to I go about buying such a ticket? If I get the Sydney - Tokyo - Sydney with points through the QF website, how can I link those tickets to the JAL/Finnair tickets? Do I even have to link them or can I treat them as separate tickets? I know these companies are all One World companies... so, is there a way to get such tickets easily or should I ask a travel agent's?

Your SYD-NRT / NRT-SYD and NRT-Milan-NRT will be completely separate unrelated tickets. "Linking" is information only. Does not give any protection on schedule changes.

why should you link them if you anyway plan to spend 7/3 days on both sides.

In addition to the JAL / Finnair option from Tokyo to Milan, you also have the option of Cathay Pacific who can take you from Tokyo to their base in Hong Kong and on to Milan. Note that deep discounted economy tickets on Cathay don't earn QFF points, but most economy fares will earn.

You already know how to get the tickets from SYD to Tokyo. You can buy the ticket from Tokyo (Look for Haneda and Narita) to Milan (also multiple airports) independent (different airlines etc).

There are lots of airlines which provide one stop service between Tokyo and Milan. http://matrix.itasoftware.com is a good starting point to find what is available and how much it costs. If you want to stick with Oneworld (for the miles, even if you don't get much or nothing for cheap tickets) Cathay via Hong Kong, Finnair via Helsinki, British via London, Air Berlin (Ethihad codeshare via AbuDhabi and Dusseldorf). Alitalia flies non stop, should be best with children.

Alitalia flies direct from Milan to Tokyo, though if you want to stay in oneworld I'd suggest Cathay via Hong Kong or Qatar via Doha. You may also choose finnair via Helsinki or BA via London.
Finnair should offer the quickest route due to geography, plus Helsinki airport is amazing for connections, I'd probably take them.

Don't forget EK. I'd probably do a visit to tokyo once instead unless you have more of a reason to do so such as family or events to see.
